Some have decided not to come in the CRC for fear it is just too busy.  While there are many people in the CRC at any given time, people are spread out through the large building.  So, you'll be able to find things that you want to do at pretty much any time.  Thanks to those that are coming and, if you have not been, please come check us out!

Youth of free/reduced lunch may also obtain a 20 punch pass at any time for only $36.  See p. 37 of the Summer activity guide.

MRD News:
More Good Stuff to Come!
By Ken Sherbenou, Executive Director

The Community Recreation Center (CRC) has been open for two months now. I must say, we have been completely humbled by the extent it has been embraced by the community. We are so honored to manage this new wonderful piece of Montrose infrastructure, and it is extremely satisfying to see the community take ownership of its recreation center. Participation has exceeded our expectations, and we are very grateful to all, both our regular regulars and our new regulars. We hope you use your Rec. Center a lot, for a very long time.

With so much excitement about the new indoor recreational opportunities available, the other amenities that will soon be online have been somewhat overshadowed. This includes the site work and landscaping that is a part of phase I, the CRC construction. With the warmer weather and the irrigation water flowing, crews have been busy planting trees and bushes, pouring sidewalks, building the irrigation pond south of the canal, as well as preparing the outdoor child watch, party room and pool patios for use. Our thanks to Julee Wolverton, Montrose's very own Olmsteadesk, landscape architect. Julee has done well to design the exterior to be just as beautiful as the interior, and we are soon to see the fruits of that labor.

Additionally, thanks to a Great Outdoor Colorado (GOCO) grant that comes from Lottery proceeds, phase II, Outdoor Facilities, will be online soon as well.   The perimeter trail, which we have dubbed as the outdoor walk/jog track, is open now. The two climbing boulders, the erosion boulder and the mighty fin, are also open now. The six outside pickleball courts will open in June or July. They are currently complete, but they are awaiting their final coat and stripping which requires consistently warm weather. The multipurpose fields, about 4 acres, will be seeded with Kentucky bluegrass shortly, and then will be ready for play in July or August. We will soon see very regular activity not only inside the CRC but also outside.

Furthermore, as a part of CRC project, the old Aquatic Center, which provided great service to the community for 30 years, is being renovated into an indoor turf Field House. Construction crews have completed demolition that includes filling in the pool and blasting a path for a new hallway through the old women's locker room (which maximizes the field length). The renovation project is proceeding well overall but there have been a few hiccups. For example, we will need to reinforce some beams that were negatively affected by the humid pool environment. Once complete, the Field House will be able to well serve Montrose for a very long time to come.   It will include an indoor turf field, three multi-purpose rooms and the existing outdoor pool. At this point, it is uncertain if MRD will be able to open the outdoor pool this summer.   We will keep the community posted and announce the Field House Grand Opening in the media and in our newsletters once the plan for opening coalesces.

Finally, if you have not been to the CRC, please come check it out. Some drive by and see a full parking lot and decide to stay away for fear it is too busy. Although a lot of people are in the CRC using it, it is a huge facility with tremendous capacity. We did our best to offer as much and as many activities as possible. This means that you will be able to find something you what you want to do even though the facility has a lot of people in it. I believe the best exercise is that which you will actually do. Thus, the CRC was designed to provide a seemingly limitless menu of recreational opportunities, which will hopefully keep you active and engaged for the long haul!

Black Hills Energy presented MRD with a $50,000 rebate to help offset the capital costs of installing high efficiency HVAC equipment.
Thanks to Black Hills!

The landscaping in front of and around the CRC is progressing.  For example, over the past several weeks, construction crews have been excavating in front of the CRC.  They are removing some of the fill and replacing it with top soil so trees and bushes grow well.  Site work also includes completing the patios off the pool, the child watch and party rooms.

The Rotary Fishing Derby is next weekend, May 6th from 9am to 11am!
