  • The Connect Trail Project is Evolving!
MRD and the City are progressing plans to enhance our trail system with 2.25 miles of new trail and two underpasses under our two busiest roads.  Del-mont, the lead trail designer, is progressing plans that will be complete soon.  MRD is undertaking some CRC site development now to further establish the CRC as a trailhead of the Uncompahgre River Trail.   In the coming weeks, you will see additional bike parking, a large flagstone sign showing the connection to the river trail and a picnic table added to the CRC site.  Also, one of the project partners, the Western Colorado Conservation Corp., will be clearing the trail alignment this fall!  See the article below on this step that will begin showing the great connection that will run from the Colorado Outdoors development on the north end of town to the CRC on the south end of town.  The project is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2019.
  • The Holly Park and Riverbottom Drive survey is complete and the $1M DOLA grant has been submitted.  Thanks so much to all who took the time to complete this survey.  We received 440 responses, which will not only help us pursue this grant but it will also make sure the project meets needs as best as possible.  Click here
to see the results.  Grant decisions will be made by DOLA in December.

MRD News: WCCC to Begin Trail Clearing Work
for Connect Trail Project

Western Colorado Conservation Corps to Begin Clearing for New Recreation Trail

The Western Colorado Conservation Corps (WCCC) will be visiting Montrose the week of September 4 th to clear the alignment of the upcoming Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Connect Initiative trail project.  The trail project, scheduled to start construction in early 2019 will add 2.25 miles of recreation trail and include underpass crossings of Main Street and Townsend Avenue.  Once completed, the City's recreation trail network will be continuous north-south between Colorado Outdoors and the Community Recreation Center and will be almost entirely separated from vehicular traffic.

The project is being made possible due largely in part to a $2M GOCO grant recently awarded to the City and Montrose Recreation District.  The WCCC was a key community partner in helping to bring this grant to Montrose.  WCCC crews will be clearing brush along the proposed trail alignment on Colorado Outdoors property and near City Market South on the east side of Townsend Avenue as time allows.  Crews will camp out on Colorado Outdoors property throughout the week and are being treated to some fly fishing lessons on the Uncompahgre River thanks to Mayfly Outdoors, Scotts Fly Rods, and Gunnison Gorge Anglers.

We would like to publicly welcome WCCC to Montrose and appreciate their help in making the upcoming recreation trail project a reality.

New Silver Sneakers Yoga Class, the Return of Monday Circuit Training, and Rearranging of the Fitness Area

September is going to be an exciting month for Fitness at the CRC. Beginning Monday September 17th, we will be offering an additional 9:30am Silver Sneakers Yoga class in the Fit Zone. Silver Sneakers Yoga has grown in popularity at the CRC and we have had numerous requests for an additional class. We are pleased to be able to offer this additional yoga class to our Silver Sneakers Members.

Beginning Monday September 10th, we will be resuming the Monday Circuit Training class and offering Circuit Training from 11am to Noon on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Please note that this class is limited to the first 20 participants and you must be familiar with the weight machines before joining the class. The weight machine circuit area is closed during this class, but the free-weight and cardio areas are still open for use.

During the maintenance shutdown, we also hope to rearrange the fitness area in order to make the free-weight area safer. We have watched the free-weight area grow in popularity over the last year, which has been amazing, but has also led to some overcrowding and less than optimal situations with patrons performing dynamic lifts, kettlebell swings, and plyo-box jumps in close proximity to other patrons. To help make the fitness area safer for everyone, we are hoping to move the machine weight circuit into the area where the free-weights are currently located. Since the machine weight circuit has a fixed footprint, we feel that switching these areas will lead to increased safety in the weight room and enable us to add additional equipment in the future. We are excited about this change and think you will enjoy the new layout of the Fitness Area.

Fitness Instructors and Substitute Instructors Needed

MRD is still in need of certified fitness instructors to instruct or substitute instruct multiple different class formats including Spinning, TRX, Strength & Conditioning, Mat Pilates, and Zumba. If you are a certified instructor or are interested in becoming certified, please contact John Wagner (970) 497-8565 to discuss potential openings and available class times.

July 2018 Climbing Competition

A note from Coach Aaron:
Thank you to all the great competitors who showed up at our first ever community climbing competition. We had a great time seeing so many young climbers working hard and encouraging one another. Climbing is the perfect sport for building overall strength while fostering a positive growth-mindset. It was inspiring to see all these athletes work so hard to achieve their goals.  We could not have done this without the support of DMEA elevate, and the Montrose Kayak and Surf shop. Climbing is all about community and these local business understand that! Everyone had such a great time that I am already scrambling to think of way to keep this momentum going and have another climbing get together.
