NCA Impact: Small Town Cultures

The North Country Alliance has joined forces with the Adirondack Economic Development Corporation and the Town of Plattsburgh LDC to offer a loan package to Small Town Cultures, Inc. This financing will enable the company to purchase an automated filling machine, boosting production, reducing labor costs, supporting growth, and providing working capital.

Owned and operated by Cori Deans, Small Town Cultures, Inc. is based in Plattsburgh, NY, and specializes in probiotic-rich fermented foods made with locally sourced ingredients. With their recent product launches in Wal-Mart, Whole Foods, and Price Chopper, the funding will help the company meet increased production demands.

Currently employing twelve people, Small Town Cultures, Inc. plans to hire an additional eight employees thanks to this project. For more details on their products, visit Small Town Cultures.

New Member Spotlight: Trudeau Institute

The NCA is thrilled to welcome new members this year, including Trudeau Institute from Saranac Lake. As an independent, not-for-profit biomedical research center, Trudeau Institute specializes in studying immune system responses to infectious diseases such as SARS-CoV-2, influenza, zika, dengue, cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis, and others.

Trudeau Institute has a long history of leading scientific discovery since it was founded 140 years ago as a TB sanitarium. The Institute has evolved into a cutting-edge research laboratory studying emerging and neglected infectious diseases, and works with global pharmaceutical companies and other research organizations to develop novel therapeutic treatments and vaccines.

The Trudeau Institute's Director of Institutional Advancement and Government Relations, Elisabeth Cain, serves on the NCA's Board of Directors.

Exit Planning Survey: Please share with your networks

This survey will help us better understand the resources needed to ensure that more businesses transfer to the next generation. Please share the link through your networks.

The Northeast Transition Initiative, in partnership with a number of local and regional organizations, is researching the extent and kinds of exit planning business owners are doing across the region. Your help promoting their survey through your regular channels would be greatly appreciated. Local partners include ANCA's Center for Business in Transition, Adirondack Economic Development Corp., and CITEC.

As we all know, aging baby boomer business owners who haven’t made an exit plan and don’t know who to turn to for assistance pose a great challenge to the stability and growth in our local economies. This survey will give us vital information to begin to raise awareness of this challenge.

Once the survey results for our region are compiled, NETI will produce a report which will be available for any of us to use. This is part of an effort to strengthen the local economy by encouraging more business owners to create concrete and viable exit plans rather than leaving things to chance.

Please share the survey link through your channels through the next month or so.
