The NCA hosted a nice crowd for the Annual Meeting on June 21st at the Hotel Saranac. Returning board members and officers were re-elected, and a new board member, Melinda Little from Point Positive was also voted in. The panel discussion covered replicable programs that directly address the workforce shortfall all of our communities face.
Megan Stadler, Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Jefferson Community College, discussed how important the partnership between JCC, Naturally Lewis, the SBDC and JCED was to building and running a successful home child-care training program to boost the number of childcare spots in Jefferson and Lewis Counties.
Sylvie Nelson described how a partnership between Schluter and CVTEC got high school students solving real problems for real companies, and how that program is expanding from reaching 7 students for the first cohort, to around 70 students now.
We also had a reprise from Andrea Smith, Director of Planning and Development for Ogdensburg, on progress of the Ogdensburg Land Bank. They have been able to take down a number of blighted homes; some of the lots have been acquired by adjacent property owners, and in a few cases, buildings have been rehabbed and sold. In their case, keeping the numbers limited means being able to make meaningful gains without losing control of the processes.
The NCA's next in-person meeting will be on October 18th. Watch for details.
