Holiday Gift Wrap Ideas from NRC Staff Assistant Lisa Ruggero
Seasons Greetings Everyone, These newsletters focus on serious issues, as they should, but to add a little bit of levity for this issue, I'd like to share some ideas for this holiday season. I wish you and yours the very best! Wrapping paper and shopping bags alone account for about four million tons of trash annually in the U.S. (Earth911.com). If every American family wrapped just three presents in reused materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields! (Eco-chick.com)
- Reusable bags aren't just for the grocery store - bring them to the mall on all holiday shopping excursions.
- Wrap gifts in newspaper, junk mail flyers, phone book pages, old maps, or other reused paper. Decorate with markers for a creative touch!
- Skip the paper altogether. When possible, wrap gifts in useful cloth such as a scarf, bandana, or dish towel.
- Resist the urge to tear open presents! Unwrap them carefully so the paper can be used next year.
- If you must use wrapping paper avoid metallic prints that cannot be recycled. Insist on paper with recycled content. Buy Recycled and close the loop!

Container Recycling Institute Releases Jobs Report
As the NRC has done throughout the year, continuing its focus on recycling job creation, we have shared information from numerous organizations. We do not necessarily support or oppose the findings presented in these reports; rather, we share them in the spirit of information dissemination. Following is a summary of a press release from the Container Recycling Institute.
"In these times of high unemployment in the US, few solutions are more urgent - and none more logical - than creating jobs out of what we are throwing away, according to a new study by the Container Recycling Institute (CRI) called, 'Returning to Work: Understanding the Domestic Jobs Impacts from Different Methods of Recycling Beverage Containers.'
Several studies on jobs and recycling have been released this year, and they all show recycling to be an area of jobs growth even during these difficult times. This study is different because it looks specifically at US jobs related to beverage container recycling. The study authors also created a user-friendly jobs calculator, which is available on CRI's web site."
