Animas High School
March 27, 2020
Greetings Ospreys,

Our staff has been hard at work this week, redesigning curriculum and envisioning ways to maintain our close community in a new reality that requires social distancing. We couldn't be more proud of our teachers and families for how they've faced this challenge and we're so excited to reconnect with our students on Monday--virtually, of course!

What are the steps for remote learning at AHS while campus remains closed?

Visit each teacher's Digital Portfolio daily to view assignments, expectations and deadlines. Links to DPs are located on the Faculty and Staff page , located under the "Our Staff" tab on the AHS website . Generally speaking, assignments will have a longer timeline than usual; teachers are thinking about weekly chunks rather than daily deadlines.

Check email daily. Teachers will communicate directly with individual students and with whole classes via email to share links to virtual meetings, updates and more.

Make a schedule for the week. Families may want to do this piece together, depending upon how much structure and support your student needs. Some classes will include opportunities for online conversations and activities at specific times, and many teachers will hold virtual Office Hours at regular times in the week so that students can check in via teleconference or email. We are expecting students to be completing school work approximately 3-4 hours a day .

What about attendance? There is no need to report daily attendance at this time. Our plan is to monitor participation and engagement through completion of course work. We'll let you know if this changes.

Keep communicating and keep breathing! This is a new frontier for all of us and we anticipate that we'll learn a lot about what works well and what doesn't in our first week of remote teaching and learning. Please don't be shy about emailing teachers and staff with any and all questions, observations and ideas you might have--and please be patient with yourselves and with us as we all figure it out together!

What are the latest updates on AHS events and programs?

  • We have decided to extend the window of time for juniors to complete their LINK Internships. Some may complete remote or in-person internships before the end of this school year, some over the summer and others during their senior year. Want more details? See LINK Programmatic Changes for the Class of 2021.

  • We are monitoring recommendations and have not yet cancelled or postponed Prom, All School Exhibition or Graduation events. More specific updates about graduation activities are in this Letter to Seniors and Families, sent out yesterday.

  • The Yearbook staff is assessing deadlines and pushing production back, but is still committed to producing The Evergreen, AHS' 2019-20 yearbook. Look for more details coming your way next week.

  • We've decided to host our first Online Osprey Parent Coffee next Friday morning at 8:30. Please grab your computer or phone and a mug of your favorite morning beverage and join Sean and Libby. We'll check in on our move to remote learning and what lies ahead for the rest of the year. To join, create a free Zoom account, then click this meeting link, which you can also find on the Events Calendar on the AHS website, under the "News and Events" tab.

These are times that call upon all of us to think about the greater good as we stay home and make significant adjustments to our daily life. We miss seeing our students in person, but remain grateful for the strong Osprey community.

Be well, stay connected and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!
A Message from Jenny McKenzie

As we've already shared, Kat Jackson will not be returning to AHS next year as her family has decided to move back to Australia. While we're sad to have Profe Kat leave, we're thrilled to share that we will be welcoming Jenny McKenzie back to our faculty in the fall! Jenny taught Spanish at Animas before moving with her husband to Spain.

¡Hola, de nuevo, Animas!  Hello again! After three years away, I am ready to head home, and I could not be more thrilled that this includes rejoining the Osprey community. Living in Barcelona over the last three years has been quite an adventure, and I look forward to sharing the lessons in language and culture I have learned along the way. That said, cliche as it may sound, the distance has definitely made this heart grow fonder for the town of Durango and, in particular, for being part of an educational community that is both inspiring and heart-warming. So, thanks for inviting me back to my “dream job!” I can't wait to emerge from isolation and re-join the team. Until then, I send all my best to students and families and the community during this difficult time   Hasta pronto, amigos :)
