Senior Quillspreys Ella Hansen and Aspen Barnard take us on a sneak peek tour of the new Nest, which we're scheduled to move into for the start of 2nd semester in January!

Greetings Ospreys,

Our community gathered together for two special events this week--the sophomore Rocketry Exhibition and the November NEST Meeting--the final one at our Twin Buttes campus as preparations are underway to move to our new campus at Fort Lewis College on December 16, the last day of this semester, so we can start the new year in our new building. Please be sure to save the date for our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Friday, January 20, 5:30pm, where we'll open the doors to all in appreciation for the incredible support that has brought us to this exciting moment in AHS' history.

Be sure to check out Quillsprey Rosie LeCompte's interview with Cassidy Hayden and Mitchell Bidart, whose rocket took top place honors with its 286 foot launch, below. Congratulations to Cassidy and Mitch for their excellent design and also to Porter Clevano and Eila Lance, who took 2nd place with a 282 foot launch and Addys Vale and Aspen Machicek for their 3rd place finish with a 263 foot launch. Junior Llew Schill launched their winning rocket from last year, just for fun, and it reached 318 feet! Not quite enought to beat Cassidy and Mitch's current school record of 334 feet, which they achieved in practice launches. We appreciate the supportive cheers from families and friends who joined us at Smith Sports Complex to see Osprey learning taking flight!

This week's NEST Meeting, facilitated by Student Council, included performances from three student bands, each formed in Music Performance electives taught by the talented crew of educators from iAM Music. We love seeing Osprey talent on display and encourage you to mark your calendars for the iAM Music Student Showcase on December 11 at Animas City Theater so you can hear them, too.

Our new campus features a gorgeous 2nd story AudioLab with mountain views that we know will further inspire our student musicians. It has recording and breakout rooms, which will provide designated space for Ospreys to engage in project work including interviews, podcasting, music recording and more. The AudioLab will benefit all students as they use it across the curriculum. Similarly, our MakerSpaces, two large areas on the ground floor, will increase opportunities for students to build and create beautiful work in all disciplinary areas. We want to thank La Plata Electric Association's Round Up Foundation for their generous financial support in helping us outfit both spaces with equipment to maximize their potential. Please be sure to round up your monthly electric bill to help support community nonprofits like AHS!

Upcoming Events

Join us for the November TWIGS Coffee on Monday at 8:30am in Tory Dillie's classroom. Drop in to visit with Rebecca, meet other families and chat about any emerging questions, ideas or issues. Don't forget--we'll discuss Johann Hari's book Stolen Focus at the next TWIGS Happy Hour on November 30, which will be at Zia Taqueria North's upstairs cantina.

Student Council is hosting an Autumn In-Formal next Friday, November 11, from 5:30 to 7:30pm at AHS. Students are encouraged to bring a dish to share and join in for an evening of movies, games and good old hanging out. StuCo is seeking parent chaperones for the event; email s.davis24@animasihghschool.com to help out.

Also on Friday evening, Osprey Parent Laurie Shepard (mom to Abbey '21) is opening her home at 237 CR 206 for the LSDesigns Holiday Blowout, selling her popular designer down jackets at discounted prices, with a percentage going to support AHS. Laurie will be joined by fellow AHS parent artists Val Russel (mom to Porter Hilgenberg '24) who will sell her gorgeous handcrafted Flying Hatter hats, photographer Todd Macon (dad to Mia '24) and chessboard inventor William Holden (dad to Eli '24) of HoldenArt. We're working on adding some Osprey student artists into the mix, too. Reach out to libby.cowles@animashighschool.com if you're interested in selling your artwork at the event. Stop by to get a jump on your holiday shopping while supporting local artists and our school!

Have a great weekend and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!
