Animas High School
December 20, 2019
Greetings Ospreys,

That's a wrap! Our first semester of the 2019-20 school year has come to a close with Presentations of Learning generating thoughtful reflection and goal-setting that will help students moving forward in the new year. We are so very proud of the growth we're seeing and grateful for our teachers' skillful capacity to help our students stretch and learn.

Have an extra necktie or two around the house that you'd like to donate? Our professional dress closet could use a few ties for students in need to borrow for exhibitions and POLs. Please bring them our way in the new year!

Final grades for first semester have been entered in Infinite Campus. We do not send out report cards; to view final grades, log in to IC, select "Reports" in the drop down menu and then select "Semester 1 Report Card."

Alumna Ellis McNichol (AHS class of 2017) is leading the charge on bringing together Animas and Fort Lewis College students to design, build and pedal-power a float for the Snowdown Parade on January 31. Through her work at the FLC Environmental Center, Ellis is using the advocacy skills she honed at AHS to address climate change and inspire folks to take action to protect our planet. Her vision for the float is to construct it entirely from up-cycled materials and to pull it behind bicycles rather than a car or truck. The AHS Interact Club is getting involved in creating the float, but there's certainly room for more students and families to help out. The float design committee is meeting over the holiday break and they are seeking a location that will include room for the construction of the float. Please reach out directly to Ellis at ecmcnichol@fortlewis.edu if you would like to help with the float or if you have a garage, basement or outbuilding that might work well as a float-building and storage spot.

As seniors are hearing about early action and early decision applications, we want to give a big shout out to Jess Morrison, who has been named the December College Counselor of the Month by the Colorado Council on High School/College Relations. The process of researching, selecting, applying to, financing and deciding upon colleges is complex, and our students and families are fortunate to have such a knowledgable guide. We certainly appreciate having her as part of our team of educators at Animas!

Speaking of appreciation, thank you to all of our parents who banded together to create such a special luncheon for our staff this afternoon. Teaching can be a challenging and often undervalued profession and we are grateful that our community understands just how important our teachers and staff are. Thank you to all who cooked, donated, decorated, served and supported!

As a reminder, second semester begins for students on Tuesday, January 7 , as we have a Professional Development Day for staff on Monday the 6th.

We hope that the winter break offers up opportunities for our families to connect, relax and celebrate together in ways that bring deep joy. Happy holidays and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!
