News from the Nest
We hope everyone is enjoying the second snow day of the week today!

The AHS Board of Directors will meet Sunday from 10:00 to 2:00 for a special Work Session focusing on developing long-range funding strategies to support the building of our permanent facility. We appreciate Kirk Komick and his team at the Rochester Hotel and R Space for their generous sponsorship of the session. The public is welcome to attend.

The Sophomore Math/Biology Exhibition is next Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Students in Dan Thurber's Math 2 and Summer Sanford's Biology classes will present original research and statistical analysis they've conducted, looking at various factors that might positively impact plant growth with an eye toward developing sustainable practices for a changing planet. All are welcome--please join us!

Many thanks to Carver Brewing Company for hosting our next Ospreys Dining Out fundraiser is this Wednesday. Stop by any time of day for a delicious meal and Carver's will donate 15% of your bill to AHS-- please be sure to mention AHS to your server so they know you are dining in support of our school .

Wednesday is the deadline for Osprey Week fees, which are posted in Infinite Campus. Please pay through IC or drop off a check in the main office. Osprey Week takes place March 18 through 22 and students will meet with their groups one final time on March 6. Please reach out to individual Osprey Week leaders with questions.

Thanks to a generous grant, we will offer another session of PSAT prep in partnership with Durango Academic Coaching to 10 students, free of charge, beginning in mid-February. The class will meet weekly for a month, with the day of week to be determined by those who are interested. To sign up, please contact sean.woytek@animashighschool.com.

Finally, with all this snow we're receiving this winter, please remember to keep our upper parking lot safe for all by circling around and pulling up as far as you can at drop off and pick up. This helps the flow of traffic to keep moving. Thank you!

There is no school on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King holiday. Enjoy the long weekend and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!

Student Teacher Coleman Kane
We are glad to welcome Coleman Kane , a senior studying education through the Fort Lewis College Teacher Education Program , to AHS. Coleman will complete his student teaching in Dan Thurber's math classes this semester. Hailing from Fort Collins, Coleman reports that he loves "the processes, patterns and procedures that often get overlooked in traditional educational models." In addition to working alongside Dan in his Math 2 and Advanced Algebra classes, Coleman is excited to backcountry ski with Dan and students during XBlock. Please introduce yourself to Coleman next time you see him and help us welcome him aboard!
Senior Project Spotlight
Senior Project is in full swing, with the class of 2019 exploring a vast array of topics over the course of the semester.

Richard Dilworth is researching the skills that make for a great barista, which connects to his career goals. As part of his Senior Project, he will compare five different methods for brewing drip-style coffee: Chemex, French Press, AeroPress, Pour Over, and batch brew. Richard is seeking donations or loans:

Brewers (including any filters)
  • Aeropress
  • Chemex
  • Pour Over
Accessories
  • Kitchen scale
  • Hand or mechanical grinder with adjustable settings
  • Beverage Thermometer

Richard is working with an experienced barista who will teach him proper maintenance and upkeep of the devices, and he will return equipment in excellent shape.

If you would like to make a donation, please contact Cyle in the Inclusion Department at cyle.talley@animashighschool.com .
