Dr. Andrew Gulliford, Fort Lewis College Professor of History and Environmental Studies provides the class of 2025 with some historical and cultural background on the Bears Ears National Monument as part of their project and in preparation for their May camping trip
Greetings Ospreys,

Our staff will gather together tomorrow for professional development work dedicated to supporting positive school culture at the Nest, which we recognize at Animas as foundational to student success. As a reminder, there are no classes for students tomorrow, and campus will be closed as our staff is meeting off campus.

Tomorrow evening, Student Council hosts Ospreys on Ice at Chapman Hill 7:30-9pm. Students are encouraged to join in for a fun early "Pal-entine" gathering open to all.

Next Week's Events
Student Council is encouraging a little creative school spirit next week, with Spirit Week running Monday through Thursday.

Students in Steve Smith's Astronomy elective will head to the Sitter Family Hall at Fort Lewis College Tuesday morning to see several demonstrations related to light and spectra. They will also tour the observatory in Sitter and, weather permitting, observe the sun through telescopes with solar filters.

On Wednesday afternoon, the school will gather together for a NEST Meeting during Advisory period, facilitated by Student Council.
Senior Maya Olivier will take school photos for all transfer students as well as those who have requested photo retakes Thursday morning so all students will be included in the AHS Yearbook. The Yearbook staff is inviting Ospreys to submit their design ideas for the cover; submissions due by March 4.

As a reminder, next Friday, February 18 is a Professional Development Day for staff, and there will be no classes.
How to Survive Valentine’s Day? Eat sugar!
Mia Macon, Animas Quill
February 14th has been a special day since 496 AD, celebrated yearly and known for its heart-shaped candies and romantic ambiance. Here at Animas High School, to celebrate the one and only Valentine's Day, the Osprey Theater Company will be holding a thematic bake sale fundraiser: 10 Ways to Survive Valentine's Day.

This Monday, there will be an assortment of treats being sold outside the West building, at the picnic tables near the parking lot. Ranging from $2-4 you can buy a variety of baked goods, sodas, gift bags, energy drinks, chips and more to help support the Osprey Theater Company and their upcoming production of 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse, which will be staged in May.
Upcoming Exhibitions
The sophomore class has two Exhibitions of Learning on the horizon:

Mark your calendars--all are welcome to attend both!

Student Council Winter Blood Drive
On the heels of their successful blood drive last fall, Student Council is inviting the community to sign up to donate blood in the AHS Commons on Thursday, February 24, 11am to 4pm. Sign up here to reserve your time slot. Students aged 16 or 17 are welcome to participate with parent permission. Look for StuCo members tabling at lunch to sign up in person.

COVID Updates
This week, we identified only 1 new COVID case in our 9th grade. Weekly Tuesday afternoon on-campus COVID testing continues as a mitigation strategy; sign up here. Our school code is C0075 and once registered, students can test weekly without re-registering. Learn more about the program here.

Finally, for everyone's safety, we would like to remind all students to use the path between the lower parking lot and campus rather than walking on the road.

Enjoy your three-day weekend and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!
