Darwin & Dinosaurs

Opens March 8

In 1859, Darwin published On the Origin of Species, in which he argued that all life forms are related through common descent and that different species emerged (and continue to emerge) as a result of natural selection. It is widely considered to be one of the most important books in science.

But he didn’t dream it up one day walking in the park. It was the result of what he saw on a five year voyage around the world, studying the plants and animals of South America, the Galápagos Islands, and Australia, followed by years of research and experimentation. And his perspective and conclusions were only possible in light of then-recent geological and paleontological discoveries.

Darwin & Dinosaurs is a story-based, interactive exhibit that sets the stage before Darwin’s famous voyage, follows him around the world as he finds clues indicating life evolves, and concludes with modern discoveries that have proved him right. Fascinating, engaging and, educational, D&D lets visitors see the world as Darwin saw it.

Meet Your Neville Team!

When longtime Collections Manager Louise retired last summer after 36 years of dedicated service, the Neville team faced the challenge of finding a successor who could continue her legacy. In January, we were thrilled to welcome Afton Esson to the role.

Afton joins us from the Goodhue County Historical Society in Red Wing, Minnesota, where he spent ten years preserving and sharing local history. He served as the Archives and Research Library Manager for seven years before transitioning to Curator of Objects and Exhibits.

Afton holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Winona State University and is currently completing his Master’s in Museum Studies with a focus on collections and exhibitions at Johns Hopkins University. He will officially complete the program in May.

Since arriving at the Neville, Afton has already begun forging strong connections within the community and is excited to continue working with staff, volunteers, and visitors to care for and showcase the museum’s collection.

Outside of Museum life, Afton is an avid gamer with an impressive collection of video game systems—including an Atari 2600! He also enjoys spending time with his partner, Riah, and their cat, Dagmar.

Please join us in giving Afton a warm welcome to the Neville Public Museum!

Delay of Game: Overtime
