SPARK! & Memory Cafe: Morbid Curiosities
Tuesday, October 19
10:00-11:00 a.m.
|
|
It's a fall tradition! Each year, museum staff lead lucky visitors through a special tour of the "darker" side of the museum to celebrate Halloween. You'll see artifacts not normally on display, and hear the spooky stories behind them.
SPARK! is a cultural program for people with early to mid-stage memory loss and their care partners. Programs are designed to keep participants actively engaged in their communities by providing experiences that stimulate conversations, provide peer support, and inspire creativity through engaging in museum experiences. SPARK! programs are offered free of charge, but we do ask that you RSVP so we know how many participants to expect.
This fall, the Brown County Memory Cafe and SPARK! are working together to offer joint programs at the museum. Please email Ryan with any questions and to RSVP for our upcoming programs. We look forward to seeing you there!

76th Art Annual
Opens October 30
|
|
The 76th Art Annual exhibit is an all-media, juried exhibition of current artworks produced by artists living in the counties of Northeastern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
This juried art exhibition began in 1942 during the height of World War II. For three-quarters of a century, many of this region’s most celebrated and talented artists have exhibited their work as part of this Green Bay tradition. Accepted artwork for the 76th Art Annual will be selected by a juror from outside the region and in accordance with the rules and conditions as outlined in the prospectus.

Life Form is an installation by local textile artist Stacey Burkhart. As a "Community Engaged Artist" with TimeSlips, she made weekly phone calls with nine elders in the Green Bay and Wausau areas. Stacey had the task of presenting "beautiful questions" to engage their minds and hear their stories. "Beautiful questions" are a facet of the TimeSlips program. During the 8 week process, Stacey created 70 pennants from repurposed vintage textiles bearing connections to each elder's story. Every pennant displays a short, simple, four-letter word, representing key points during their conversations. Each word is only used once, but words often crossed over into the others' stories, and some took on different meanings. Without knowing the memories the elders shared, the artist provides space for the viewer to imagine their own.

Spirited: Prohibition in America
Now open!
|
|
This exhibit brings visitors back to this period of flappers and suffragists, bootleggers and temperance lobbyists, and real-life legends, such as Al Capone and Carry Nation. Spirited explores the history of Prohibition, from the dawn of the temperance movement to the unprecedented repeal of a constitutional amendment in 1933. What made the country go “dry” and how did America change during this period in history? Visitors will learn about the amendment process, the role of liquor in American culture, the cultural revolution of the roaring ’20s, and how liquor laws vary from state to state today.

It's beginning to look a lot like...

...holiday volunteer round-up time! Following 2020's virtual festivities, we are so excited to start planning our favorite in-person traditions, including Bruce the Spruce and the Children Only Shop, neither of which would be possible without a merry team of volunteers. Do you have extra seasonal spirit to share? Do you speak and sing fluent Spruce? Are you an expert gift-wrapper? Join the fun by filling out an application or emailing Katy for more details today!
