This exhibit brings visitors back to this period of flappers and suffragists, bootleggers and temperance lobbyists, and real-life legends, such as Al Capone and Carry Nation. Spirited explores the history of Prohibition, from the dawn of the temperance movement to the unprecedented repeal of a constitutional amendment in 1933. What made the country go “dry” and how did America change during this period in history? Visitors will learn about the amendment process, the role of liquor in American culture, the cultural revolution of the roaring ’20s, and how liquor laws vary from state to state today.

SPARK! is a cultural program for people with early to mid-stage memory loss and their care partners. Programs are designed to keep participants actively engaged in their communities by providing experiences that stimulate conversations, provide peer support, and inspire creativity through engaging in museum experiences. SPARK! programs are offered free of charge, but we do ask that you RSVP so we know how many participants to expect.

This fall, the Brown County Memory Cafe and SPARK! are working together to offer joint programs at the museum. Please email Ryan with any questions and to RSVP for our upcoming programs. We look forward to seeing you there!

Life Form
Now open!
Life Form is an installation by local textile artist Stacey Burkhart. As a "Community Engaged Artist" with TimeSlips, she made weekly phone calls with nine elders in the Green Bay and Wausau areas. Stacey had the task of presenting "beautiful questions" to engage their minds and hear their stories. "Beautiful questions" are a facet of the TimeSlips program. During the 8 week process, Stacey created 70 pennants from repurposed vintage textiles bearing connections to each elder's story. Every pennant displays a short, simple, four-letter word, representing key points during their conversations. Each word is only used once, but words often crossed over into the stories of others. Some of these words can take on different meanings. Without knowing the memories the elders shared, the artist provides space for the viewer to imagine their own.
It's beginning to look a lot like...
...holiday volunteer round-up time! Following 2020's virtual festivities, we are so excited to start planning our favorite in-person traditions, including Bruce the Spruce and the Children Only Shop, neither of which would be possible without a merry team of volunteers. Have you got extra seasonal spirit to share? Do you speak and sing fluent Spruce? Are you an expert gift-wrapper? Join the fun by filling out an application or emailing Katy for more details today!
Stay safe and stay tuned for updates!
