A Message from Lauren Moore, New York State Librarian

Headshot of Lauren Moore New York State Librarian.

At the NYS Library, we’re proud to support libraries and library users across the state with our services and collections. Perhaps the most rewarding part of this work is visiting New York’s libraries. In my travels across the state this year, I stopped in at a number of libraries, including Kingston Library, Hudson Free Library, Mountain Top Library, Depauville Free Library, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, and Vassar Library, where I was delighted by local history collections, inspired by community partnerships, and amazed by the creativity and resourcefulness of the brilliant people who help New York’s libraries thrive. I also visited system headquarters, such as North Country Library System, and led conversations with hundreds of representatives from the Four County Library System and Southern Adirondack Library System. In each location, I was rewarded with a first-hand understanding of how library workers strive to meet the specific, unique, and evolving needs of their communities. I truly hope you’ll invite me to visit your library, too.

Libraries also came to visit us! We hosted library groups from Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Monroe County Library System, and OWWL Library System. If your group is interested in making the trip to Albany, we have so much at the NYS Library we’d love to share with you. If there aren’t any travel plans in your immediate future, we hope you’ll enjoy this issue of our newsletter, which highlights libraries and library adventures of all kinds.

Finally, we know we aren’t the only ones with exciting and impactful library stories to tell. If you have a library story—from your own life, or perhaps the long history of your library or community—please consider adding it to the Personal History Initiative. You can find more information about this exciting initiative below.

Summer Reading 2023 is in the books, and the NYS Library is gathering stories and statistics from public libraries across the state. We're tracking participation by kids and teens, as well as the number and type of programs and activities that were offered.

It may be hard to believe, but the next Summer Reading season is just around the corner, and the theme for 2024 is: adventure! Libraries are excited about the many possibilities that an adventure-based theme holds for programming and events for all ages.

Many public libraries will soon begin the planning cycle for Summer Reading 2024! You can stay up-to-date on Summer Reading announcements and resources with the Summer Reading at New York Libraries blog! Subscribe to the Summer Reading blog today.

The Travels of Alexander Steward Scott: “a small Library is a very desirable thing”

Before dawn on August 2, 1826, Alexander Stewart Scott stepped aboard the steamboat Chambly in Quebec City, Canada. He was on vacation from his studies at law school and was on his way to visit family in western New York. Fortunately for us, he kept a diary of his trip. Scott’s hand-written diary can be viewed as part of the New York State Library’s Digital Collections.

Traveling by steamboat, stage, canal packet, and wagon, his journey took him, via land and water, along a route defined by Lake Champlain, Lake George, and the Erie Canal.

Scott was 21 years old; the Erie Canal was not yet one year old. (In operation in parts since 1819, it was not officially “opened” until October 26, 1825.)

Readers can find just about anything in a library, and as library workers, we’re always happy to help patrons discover all kinds of things between the pages of a book. Sometimes we even discover some surprising finds ourselves!
