A Message from Lauren Moore, New York State Librarian

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began to draw increased attention to the persistent crisis of the digital divide, the New York State Library has expanded its efforts to help libraries meet these new and increasing challenges in their communities. Closing digital equity gaps in New York State will require the coordination, cooperation, and intentional capacity-building of the many organizations working to support digital inclusion.

Visit our website for more information about the efforts the NYS Library is making to help bring the communities of New York State into a future where everyone can be a full participant in our digital society. Participate in our webinars, join our digital equity email list, and read about our vision for Digital Equity in New York, as described in our Outline for Collaborative Change.

New York State Library Acquires Harold Holzer Papers

The NYS Library acquired the papers of award-winning President Lincoln scholar and historian, Harold Holzer. The collection includes the research files and typescripts from Mr. Holzer’s 55 authored and co-authored books; original lectures; photo files covering the development of the Lincoln image, and the art and iconography of the American Civil War; audio and video recordings of his television and radio appearances; and Holzer’s original correspondence from some of the leading historians, political leaders, and performers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Mr. Holzer’s donation comes on the 30th anniversary of his appointment to the Board of the New York State Archives Partnership Trust, a post to which he was named by Governor Mario Cuomo in 1992, and still holds.

Change to Certification Procedures for Individuals with Reading Disabilities

The National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) has implemented changes to the application certification process, making it easier for individuals with reading disabilities to apply for Talking Book and Braille Library service. Until recently, individuals with reading disabilities were required to have a diagnosis and signature from a doctor of medicine to approve their eligibility for service. NLS has eased this requirement so a medical diagnosis is no longer necessary. Now, librarians, social workers, school psychologists, counselors, reading specialists, speech pathologists, and educators may certify the eligibility of applicants with reading disabilities. The NYS Talking Book and Braille Library applications have been updated to include this change to certification procedures.
