2022 in Review

2022 was a busy year for the NYS Library and libraries of all kinds across New York State. We accomplished a lot:

In February, the Research Library acquired the Research Papers of Award-winning Lincoln Scholar and Historian Harold Holzer. The collection includes the research files from Mr. Holzer’s 55 authored and co-authored books, as well as lectures, photo files, and Holzer’s original correspondence from some of the leading historians, political leaders, and performers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds were used to invest in a wide range of digital inclusion efforts across New York. The NYS Library hosted six Digital Equity Roundtables to convene digital equity practitioners and advocates across the state. Roundtables occur on the second Friday of every other month between 10-11 AM on Zoom. Everyone is welcome to attend. Roundtables are also recorded for later viewing.

The Research Library offered a robust collection of lectures available to the public on topics related to education, history, genealogy, and more. In 2022, there were more than 50 virtual programs offered with over 1,500 attendees.

The Regents Advisory Council on Libraries completed and distributed its Vision 2022 document. The Vision 2022 process included discussions, interviews, and focus groups that identified a set of shared values endorsed by libraries of all types in New York, including universal access, resilient communities, and equity for all. Explore the Vision 2022 document.

In September, the Board of Regents approved amendments to several sections of Part 90 of the Commissioner’s Regulations. The amendments are part of the implementation of Chapter 563 of the Laws of 2021, which simplified and modernized State aid formulas for various library aid programs.

Thanks for reading News from the NYS Library. We’re looking forward to another exciting year for NYS libraries in 2023!

The New York State Library is pleased to announce the appointment of Adelina DiPalo and Ashley Gauvin-Manning to its two new Digital Equity Fellowship positions.

The Digital Equity Fellows will assist the New York State Education Department (NYSED) in facilitating the Intergovernmental Working Group on Digital Equity, a committee of state agencies advising on and implementing the Digital Equity Act and Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program. The fellows will also work closely with ConnectALL as they develop the State Digital Equity Plan.

Education Guides are Now Available

Reference Librarian Marisa Gitto is creating detailed educator guides for engaging students, teachers, professors, and librarians around fascinating historical items from the NYS Library collections. Currently, she is working on an Educator Guide for the Erie Canal.

The guides include excerpts from journals, letters, newspapers, and even some items you might not expect to find in the Library’s collections, like a trading card game! Each item is accompanied by exciting lesson activities to encourage exploration, as well as graphic organizers to aid student learning.

Marisa presented the Educator Guides at both the New York Library Association and State University of New York Librarians Association conferences in 2022. Check out the NYS Library Educator Guides on the American Revolution and Women's Suffrage and Anti-Suffrage movements, now available in the NYS Library catalog.

Improve Your Library With the Assistance of the State Aid for Library Construction Program

As part of the State budget each year, funding for public library construction is made available and administered through the New York State Library. For four of the past five years, the final funding level has been $34 million; those funds have been allocated to each library system within the State according to the formula in Education Law 273-a.

The allocation chart for fiscal year 2022-2023 can be found on our website, as well as additional information about the program such as program guidelines, frequently asked questions, and webinars held by the Division of Library Development (DLD). If your library has questions about the program, please contact Natalie McDonough, Program Manager, at [email protected].

Changes are Coming to the NYS Library Website

We're making revisions to the NYS Library's website to support accessibility and success. In 2023, you'll see changes to the content on our site including clear headings, simple language, and a navigational structure to support users' accessing the information and resources they need. Here are some of the change we've made so far:

We launched a new collection of pages for Youth Services. One major change within this section is the relocation of all Summer Reading resources into the NYS Library's website, with supporting resources now located on the Library's new Summer Reading LibGuide.

We've moved the Public Library District Toolkit, Handbook for Library Trustees, and Helpful Information for Meeting Minimum Public Library Standards documents to LibGuides to support streamlined content management and improved navigation for users.
