Dear Community,
I imagine us sitting in a big circle, or let’s say a big spiral, because we are so many. We share what is moving in us from our centered hearts:
what we worry about, what we experience, what we enjoy, perhaps what we wish to accomplish. We share and we pause, patiently giving our interpreters time to connect us in our individual languages because our community spiral is international.
|
|
After the circle, we exchange Reiki treatments. When our time together ends, we travel home knowing we will meet again soon. We remain connected, although we may live far from each other. This is the picture I have of us, the inner picture I have as I write to you.
It has been a while since I sent out my first newsletter. Since then I’ve travelled to many countries, meeting you in Great Britain, Germany, France, Russia, the Netherlands, Japan and the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Many of these places were new to me. I love travelling yet I often miss being at home, and I am aware that my carbon-foot-print is increasing. I’ve decided in Europe to only travel by train. I discovered it’s far more comfortable than spending hours in airports.

|
After Japan, I travelled to beautiful Hawaii for a final Aloha and Phyllis’s memorial service.
I miss you very much Phyllis Furumoto Sensei. Sometimes I feel I cannot stop crying, sometimes it feels like everything is okay. Sometimes I am angry and feel like a motherless child as I sit in circles with many supporters. Still I know this is okay too. There is nothing wrong with my pain and my sadness. It will take as long as it takes. Since the first wave of surprise and shock that I am your successor, I am calming down and beginning to discover the gifts of preparation you gave me.

Our community has many questions and needs: questions about lineage bearer and/or grandmaster, questions and ideas about changing the name of the system, and many more. Speaking for myself I know that these times of deep crisis are not times for making major decisions. I am not ready for that. I just want to let you know, I have heard you and I am holding it all. I am working on it, holding the questions in a deep reflection, making notes, and asking myself questions. I ask and hope for your patience, imagining we are holding our burning questions together. Some of my own questions are: Who do I have to become for me to fully accept the role of being Phyllis’ successor? What qualities want to be called out of me? What skills do I have to develop? What does Reiki ask of me? What do I need to think about so that I can share it with you?
As you can see below, the Office of the Grandmaster has a lot to offer in many different places. I am thankful for your interest, for your invitations to visit your communities, and for the work our organizers do. The gifts of the internet and Zoom meetings can save us all some travel—keeping in mind that sitting in front of a screen and meeting you can never replace the times we meet in person. I am planning to offer an online-workshop for interpreters and I also want to do Zoom meetings with you, as another first step.
As Hermann Hesse writes in his poem
Stages,* “In all beginnings dwells a magic force f
or
guarding us and helping us to live.”
I would be happy to meet and connect with you soon and sit in circle together.
Thank you for being on our journey together,
Johannes

The newsletter includes our scheduled events for 2020, the opportunities for us to meet in person. By “in person” I mean in the same room, doing hands-on treatment, embracing, breathing the same air, and eating together. In these encounters, we are live the experience of oral tradition where the totality of each of our being comes together with the potential to create something greater than the sum of the individual energies, something sacred.
I look forward to these unique experiences, the coming together in our “embodied” selves. I treasure what we will co-create in these events.
At the same time, I see we have other ways of being together made possible by technology that were unimaginable a short time ago. To join in deep explorations and engaged conversations online, to see one another, to take in expressions, to hear at a deeper level, all of this made possible by the fullness of sensory input…amazing.

For the past three years a group called the Succession Core Team has been meeting online monthly in a three-hour facilitated meeting where we explore the process and place of spiritual lineage in our practice. This group is dedicated to holding the practice, supporting the new lineage bearer, and growing capacity to manifest the gift this practice offers the world.
The Reiki Alliance Board has begun periodic Zoom meetings enabling up to 100 members to participate in discussions on various themes.
The UK Reiki Association
has begun a series of webinars highlighting the lives and stories of Reiki practitioners around the world.
Reiki Home
brings a rich variety of ways to connect and interact online exploring a wide range of topics. One of these is
The Circle of Scholars
, offering monthly webinars on the historical aspects of Reiki. This March the focus is
Bridging Research and Personal Practice.
It is inspiring to see how many opportunities we are creating where we can meet as Reiki students to connect, share, deepen and learn together. These online offerings allow us more and more opportunities to be together on a global scale as we strive to care for our Mother Earth.

Yesterday, I went a bicycle ride, the first in two years. I was amazed at this experience of being in my body, a different body from what I remember. My balance was a little off, my muscles did not respond as usual and of course my endurance was almost non existent. From this ride, I got the importance of taking care of myself now, today. For many years, my focus has been the care and support of Phyllis and even though this will continue in many ways, my physical realty is as a single person.
The past month has been filled with clearing space in my house, getting rid of things I don’t need anymore as well as clearing out Phyllis’ clothes, jewelry, music CD’s and the beautiful things she loved to have around her. I have several boxes of her precious things for friends that I intend to gift through my travels. I have the feeling that Phyllis continues to give to others. Our home will always be filled with the energy of our love and life together and now there is more space for me in my new way of being.
During one of the many conversations I have had these past months, we were talking about our Reiki Practice. I used to have one, now I feel I have a Reiki Life. My years with Phyllis have given me the opportunity to be with my teacher daily, work together with her, share and witness her embodiment of Usui Shiki Ryoho and grow into my own potential as a master. Many of our Reiki community may see me as the “wind beneath her wings” or, rather, the other way around, Phyllis as my wind. Now, I am flying solo. My Reiki Life is to share what I have been given, for I have been gifted so much.
I will be teaching where I am invited, sharing the Takata Archives and Furumoto’s Legacy as well as teaching and supporting students I have initiated in Hawaii. Next year, I will be taking students to Japan for pilgrimage to Kyoto and Mt. Kurama as I find the experience of Japanese culture interesting and supportive to the understanding the System I hold.
I am in fascinated and excited by the times of change we are now facing. I feel I am a bridge from old to new. As my personal life will continue to witness the end of life of my loved ones, see the deterioration of my own physical body as I plan my “end game”, knowing that younger masters are on the scene to carry on this practice with Johannes at the helm comforts me. Anchor’s Aweigh!
