Spotlight on Beethoven & Shostakovich

The Pacifica Quartet has carved a niche for itself as one of the preeminent interpreters of string quartet cycles, harnessing the group's singular focus and remarkable stamina to portray each composer's evolution. The Quartet's season began in September with concerts at the Chamber Music Society in Detroit, MI as well a series of all-Beethoven concerts in Ottawa, ON at the National Arts Centre. They continue with a monumental exploration of the Beethoven Cycle in Portland, OR at the Friends of Chamber Music from October 28 - November 4, and a survey of Shostakovich quartets presented by  Chamber Music San Francisco  (March 15 - 18).

Touring with Sharon Isbin &
Marc-André Hamelin

Inspired by a deep belief that artistic collaborations bring about extraordinary synergies, the Pacifica Quartet joins pianist Marc-André Hamelin and guitarist Sharon Isbin this season. At Baltimore's Shriver Hall Concert Series, pianist  Marc-André Hamelin joined the ensemble for a performance of Schumann's Piano Quintet in E-flat major. After a series of acclaimed concerts last season, the Quartet and Sharon Isbin reprise their collaboration with performances in Florida presented by  BIG ARTS  in Sanibel (January 10) and the  Society of the Four Arts  in Melbourne (January 13). Their program features works by Turina, Vivaldi and Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
New Release on the Horizon

The Pacifica's next album will put the spotlight on recent commissions. The Cedille Records disc will be released in 2019 and feature Shulamit Ran's Glitter, Doom, Shards, Memory String Quartet No. 3- premiered by the Quartet at Tokyo's Suntory Hall in June of 2014-and David Dzubay's String Quartet No. 2 "Oceanic".

World Premiere

The Pacifica commissions and performs new works each season. Coming up this spring, the composer David Dzubay, a fellow IU professor, has written a new string quartet that will be premiered in the spring (April 12) at the University of Chicago.
Mentoring the Next Generation
Indiana University & Aspen Music Festival

The Pacifica Quartet serves as quartet-in-residence at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, a position they are extremely proud of. In addition to overseeing the chamber music program at the university, their work also extends to the training of the school's graduate string quartet-in-residence.

In 2017, the Pacifica was invited to lead the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies at the Aspen Music Festival - this country's premier training program for emerging string quartets.  Next summer (June 19 - August 4, 2019), the Pacifica will continue to provide invaluable artistic support to some of the most promising and exciting young quartets of today.
