May/June 2026

On June 13th, Louisville Habitat completed our 10th Annual Love Your Neighborhood event in Louisville's Parkland neighborhood!

Volunteers and neighbors came together to complete exterior home repairs, cleanups, landscaping, safety improvements and other neighborhood projects that help create a safer, healthier and more beautiful Parkland.

A huge thank you to the volunteer groups who helped make the day possible:

On June 6th, Louisville Habitat participated in the Portland Festival and parade. Our parade group included Habitat homeowners, repair recipients, volunteers, DIY workshop participants, advocates, and staff for a special reunion in historic Portland.

Louisville Habitat is headquartered on Bank St and we have been investing in Portland for close to 30 years! Habitat is proud to call Portland home.

Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville doesn’t just build homes—we also help owner-occupied households stay safe and stable by repairing essential systems like roofs, HVAC, windows, doors, ramps, and more.

Steve Holm and Phil Martin's "Semi-Retirement"

Last month, we celebrated the "semi-retirement" of long-time core volunteers, Steve Holm and Phil Martin. They will no longer be volunteering on the job sites, but will continue to work on projects with us here at Louisville Habitat HQ. Both Steve and Phil have put in many years and many nails with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville. We thank them for their dedication and leadership, and the difference they have made in the lives of many.

"Love is not a feeling, Love is what you do!"

Have you been wanting to volunteer but weren't sure where to start?

We have successfully launched a new onboarding orientation for incoming volunteers. The onboarding sessions cover essential details about our mission, important safety guidelines, and how to make the most of your time at a build site.

All new volunteers must attend a virtual orientation (held on the first and third Mondays of each month). Please check the calendar and select the date that works best for you. A Microsoft Teams invite will be sent on the morning of orientation.

The next session is July 6th! Completing orientation ensures you will have all the information and resources you need for a safe and rewarding volunteer experience.

New Vehicles to the Fleet

Thanks to a generous grant from the Snowy Owl Foundation, Louisville Habitat was able to purchase two trucks to add to our fleet. We now have an all-electric Ford Lightning and a hybrid Ford Maverick.

The Lightning is able to power tools on the jobsite! The Maverick will mainly be used for CDR projects.

Landscaping Workshop

On Saturday, June 20th, Ja'mel Armstrong, Homebuyer Engagement Manager, along with the help of three advocates and landscaping guru, Brent Bosler, trained 21 homeowners on mowing, using the weed eater, pulling weeds, budgeting, HOAs, and most importantly being a good neighbor.

At 1pm, HBS was back at the Jane and Jewell Center where Susan Vance, Homebuyer Finance Manager, did a prospective Habitat homebuyer information session to introduce the Habitat Homeownership program to 33 new homebuyers!

If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Habitat Homeowner, or know someone who might be, the best place to start is attending an information session to learn more about Habitat’s homeownership program – the qualifications, program requirements and lifelong benefits. At this event, if you are interested in applying, you will receive an application to take home to complete. For a virtual session on July 29th, register click HERE. A Few Recent Home Blessings and Dedications

What is a Home Dedication?

This event takes place when the home build is complete and the new homeowners receive the keys to their new home! It's also an opportunity for family, friends, staff, and volunteers to gather and share thoughts and well wishes with the new homeowner. Often times the new homeowner prepares a feast to celebrate with all who have helped them on their journey.

June 19th was a busy day! First, we had LaQuisha's Home Blessing. Her house is being sponsored by Ford Philanthropy. With their support, Louisville Habitat was able to give a hand up—not a handout—helping LaQuisha build a solid foundation for her future. You can read more about Ford's wall build day here!

The first thing LaQuisha plans to do in her new home is host a family dinner, bringing everyone together in the space she has worked so hard to achieve.

A short while later, we celebrated the dedication of Fadumo's new home! A huge thank you to St Matthews Baptist Church, Broadway Baptist Church, Highland Baptist Church of Louisville, First Baptist Church Middletown, KY, Lyndon Baptist Church, Westport Road Baptist Church, and Melbourne Heights Baptist Church.

The dedication ceremony was a wonderful opportunity for our Core Volunteer house leader, Steve Holm, to "pass the hammer" to our new leader, Brian Brislin. Thanks to Brian's team and the Baptist Build volunteers, Fadumo now has a place to call home. For Fadumo, HOME means "a place to improve my life and live in peace and harmony."

Next, we celebrated the dedication of Monika's new home! A heartfelt thank you to Tom and Debbie Zeillmann for sponsoring Monika’s home in memory of their son, Zack.

Surrounded by Monika's family, Zack's family, and the "Dream Team"—our Core Volunteer Group of which Zack's father is a beloved member—Zack’s memory will live on, helping to create a safe, stable place for Monika to call home.

And last but not least, we dedicated Ubah's new home, sponsored in honor of Curtis & Marilyn Deem and Daniel & Mary Bess McLaughlin

For Ubah, HOME means "a future for me and my family." The first thing she plans to do when she moves into her new home is cook a meal and invite everyone who helped to celebrate with her.

The food was amazing and we loved seeing four homebuyer celebrations on a beautiful Friday afternoon.

Join Anthony in Transforming Lives

After his wife’s passing, Anthony began thinking more intentionally about his legacy. A simple first step was naming Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville as a beneficiary of an existing brokerage account. Designating a beneficiary worked well without the need to modify his existing estate plan.

One powerful way you can join Anthony in transforming lives is by designating Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville as a beneficiary of your brokerage account, IRA, or life insurance policy.

The process was quick, required minimal paperwork, and gave him some peace of mind.
