Planning for Postponements … Eventually Sports Will Return
The great majority of our sporting events have been on hold in Santa Clara County in order to keep our community healthy. With exception to a few San Jose Earthquakes matches and one San Francisco 49ers home game, all of our sporting event plans have come to a halt. Events that have taken months and in some cases years to secure, have been removed from our calendar. It is always a difficult process for us to update our website with a “postponement” or “cancellation” tag on the Calendar of Events. Our thoughts are with our event and hospitality partners during this difficult time. We are working swiftly to get events rescheduled as well as evaluate future events that may be affected.
As we prepare to enter the month of October, we have had our fair share of cancellations due to the pandemic. The month of March we were to host the US Judo Collegiate National Championships at San Jose State University. In addition to hosting the very best collegiate judo student-athletes, we were also looking forward to honoring our very own San Jose treasure - Yosh Uchida – with a gala to celebrate his 100th Birthday. April would have brought our victorious Women’s World Cup Champion USA Women’s Soccer National Team for a friendly match versus Brazil at Earthquakes Stadium. The thought of the thousands of young girls seeing their idols on the field would have been every bit as exciting as the match itself. May was annually the month for San Jose to host the premier cycling event in America; the Amgen Tour of California, unfortunately the organization has disbanded and the race is gone. June would have seen the rich golf history of Santa Clara County in the spotlight with the American Junior Golf Championship at San Jose Country Club, showcasing our phenomenal youth golf scene in Northern California and July was no different as we were scheduled to have the USA Water Polo Boys & Girls Junior Olympics in the pools all over Santa Clara County. August would have scene the Women’s Tennis Association’s longest continuous professional tournament return to the South Bay for the 49th consecutive year with the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic at San Jose State University and the theme continued in September with the Premier Lacrosse League changing their plans and our annual celebration of music and running with the Ironman Rock and Roll Races and Health Expo no longer taking over the ‘streets and beats’ in Downtown San Jose the first weekend of October.
Despite these setbacks, we are determined more than ever to continue to pursue the sporting events our community covets. Thanks to the leadership and guidance of our COVID Sports Advisory Committee, we will see a return to play in the South Bay. We have plenty of events in the works and we are excited to share some exciting announcements in October. A lot of things have changed in the world of sports, but one thing hasn’t, and that’s our commitment to continue to bring the premier sporting events to the South Bay. Sports will be an important part to rebuilding our community and economy—and we look forward to being part of it. Thank you for your continued support and stay tuned for some exciting announcements coming this Fall.

|
The San Jose Earthquakes rallied late from a 1-0 deficit to beat LAFC 2-1 for their 1st victory over the club. The Quakes comeback win was an instant classic with 2 late goals, one of which - an exhilarating extra time goal in the 93rd minute scored by Jackson Yueill.
