As we begin the fall 2020 semester uncertain about the course of the pandemic and with the paramount priority of safeguarding the university community, Rutgers will deliver the majority of undergraduate courses across the university remotely. Listen to a recorded conversation with the university’s 21st president as he talks about making difficult decisions, his commitment to students, and his vision for the university in a recent interview with Rutgers Today.
On President Holloway’s first day in office, July 1, 2020, he kick-started a $10 million focused campaign for the Scarlet Promise Grants program that provides financial aid and emergency support to Rutgers students for whom a Rutgers education otherwise would be impossible. To launch the campaign, the president personally donated $75,000, directed $125,000 in presidential discretionary funds, and announced a $1 million leadership gift from Mark Angelson, chair of the university’s Board of Governors. To date, the program has received two $1 million pledges from donors Gary and Barbara Rodkin and Greg and Anna Brown. It is President Holloway’s hope that Rutgers’ global network of friends and families will support this campaign in the spirit of being Scarlet Forever.

Assistant Professor of Library and Information Science Charles Senteio will give an overview of health equity research and how it affects us all, in large part through COVID-19 inequity and current social justice activism. He will describe how his research combines various academic disciplines and community partnerships. Professor Senteio is a community health informaticist, licensed clinical social worker, and health educator, and has consulting experience as an IT strategist and entrepreneur. Register
September 10: Life as a Journalist in 2020: A Conversation with Steve Miller
Professor of Professional Practice and Director of Undergraduate Studies, Journalism and Media Studies Steve Miller will host a webinar on this interesting topic. More information will be posted on the SC&I events page when it becomes available.
October 8, 5 p.m.: The Life and Legacy of John Lewis
Professor of Journalism and Media Studies and of History David Greenberg will host a webinar on the life and legacy of John Lewis. To whet your appetite, read Professor Greenberg’s op-ed in The Washington Post about how the poem “Invictus” embodies the life and spirit of politician and civil rights leader John Lewis.
