Secretary Padilla Sponsors Voting Modernization Bond Act of 2018
Secretary Padilla and Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego) announced Assembly Bill 668, the Voting Modernization Bond Act of 2018, which seeks $450 million to improve California’s voting systems. The funding would update aging equipment and also modernize how the state conducts elections to improve the voting experience.

Legislation Would Give California a Greater Say in Presidential Primary
Secretary Padilla and State Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) announced Senate Bill 568 calling for California voters to have an earlier say in the Presidential Primary process.
“A state as populous and diverse as California should not be an afterthought. Moving up the California primary in 2020 makes sense and will give California voters a more significant role. By holding our primary earlier, we will ensure that issues important to Californians are prioritized by presidential candidates from all political parties,” said Secretary Padilla.

Record California Voter Registration Continues to Climb
Secretary Alex Padilla released the 2017 “Odd-Numbered Year Report of Registration”.
A record
19,432,609
Californians are registered to vote, which is 77.92% of eligible Californians. The Report of Registration is a compilation of voter registration numbers reported by California’s 58 county elections offices. The report reflects registration data through February 10, 2017. Secretary Padilla Appoints Brian L. Hatch to FPPC
Secretary Alex Padilla appointed Brian L. Hatch to the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC). Mr. Hatch, who is now retired, successfully represented the California Professional Firefighters (CPF) for nearly 40 years. He began his career as a firefighter with the Ontario Fire Department in San Bernardino County, and would later become a fire captain. He was a union leader, two years as treasurer and 8 years as president of Ontario Firefighters Local 1430. For more information on Mr. hatch, click here.

Secretary Alex Padilla announced upgrades to the Secretary of State’s online search engine of successor-in-interest claims. Sucessor-in-interest claims are required from anyone seeking to use a deceased celebrity or personality’s names, voice, signature, photograph, or likeness for commercial purposes. Legislation Would Expand "Safe at Home" Program to Include Human Trafficking Victims
Secretary Alex Padilla is sponsoring Senate Bill 597 by Senator Connie Leyva which will expand the Safe at Home program by providing security to victims of human trafficking. The National Human Trafficking Hotline receives nearly twice as many calls about cases in California than in any other state. The programs currently offers services to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
