VIDEO: Secretary Padilla Discusses Attacks on Voting Rights in Video OpEd
Secretary of State Alex Padilla was featured in a
video OpEd for Mic where he discussed how far we've come since the passage of the Voting Rights Act and recent attempts to restrict them nationwide.
"While California is leading the way on expanding voting rights, in other states we've seen this wave of voter ID laws, the purging of voters from the rolls or the reduction of early voting opportunities, which is completely contrary to the spirit of the Voting Rights Act," said Secretary Padilla. "We have to stay organized, we have to stay active and we have to persist."
Secretary of State Alex Padilla participated in a voting rights digital townhall hosted by The California Endowment, Presente.org and Fusion Media's Rise Up Be Heard. As part of the Endowment's #Vota campaign, the digital townhall allowed more than 15,000 viewers to hear about California's efforts to improve when, where and how voters cast a ballot, including the implementation of the California Voter's Choice Act.
The California Voter’s Choice Act is a new law that
allows counties to conduct elections under a new model which provides greater flexibility and convenience for voters.
This new election model allows voters to choose how, when, and where to cast their ballot by:
Mailing every voter a ballot
Expanding in-person early voting
Allowing voters to cast a ballot at any vote center within their county
