Vote Centers Are Now Open in Participating Voter's Choice Act Counties

Vote Centers are now open in the counties of Madera, Napa, Nevada, Sacramento and San Mateo as part of the Voter's Choice Act. Vote Centers are open 11 days leading up to and including Election Day, giving voters the freedom to cast a ballot in-person at any vote center in their county instead of being tied to a single polling location.
In addition to weekend voting, Vote Centers will also offer evening hours for voters to cast their ballots.
At any Vote Center, voters may vote in-person, drop-off their ballots, receive a replacement ballot, vote using accessible voting machines, access voting materials in multiple languages, update voter registration as well as complete same-day registration. For more information, visit

Secretary of State and Uber Partner to Promote Voter Education

Secretary of State Alex Padilla and
Uber
announced a new public-private partnership to utilize Uber's platform to inform millions of both riders and drivers about critical election deadlines and information.
"Our partnership with Uber will deliver key election information directly to the smartphones of millions of Californians," Secretary of State Padilla said. "This is another powerful example of how public-private partnerships can use tech to inform and empower citizens. Working with Uber provides a new avenue for our office to provide verified election information directly to Californians."
Uber launched the first phase of the partnership on Monday, May 21, by including a message and link to
RegisterToVote.ca.gov
encouraging all users to register before the midnight voter registration deadline. From June 2 through Election Day—June 5—the Uber app will provide the reminder message below to riders and drivers with a link to
VoterStatus.sos.ca.gov
where they can lookup their nearest polling place or vote center.

New Report of Registration Shows Nearly 1.2 Million More Registered Voters Since last Gubernatorial Primary

Secretary of State Alex Padilla released the latest statewide Report of Registration ahead of the June 5, 2018, Statewide Direct Primary. As of April 6, 2018 there were 18,854,829 registered voters in California. This is an increase of 1,194,343 registered voters since the last Report of Registration at a similar point in a gubernatorial election cycle (April 4, 2014).
The next report, with updated numbers, is scheduled to be released Friday, May 30, 2018.

Secretary of State Alex Padilla Announces LLCs Can Now Be Formed Online, Launches New Business Chatbot

Secretary of State Alex Padilla announced for the first time that Californians can form their Limited Liability Company (LLC) online through
bizfile California
, the agency’s online business filing and search portal. Secretary Padilla also announced Eureka, a new artificial intelligence search assistant, known in the information technology world as a “chatbot,” to help customers easily navigate business resources on the Secretary of State’s website.
The Secretary of State’s new chatbot Eureka was developed in partnership with Microsoft. It answers frequently asked business entity and trademark questions. Customers can ask a question such as “How do I get a copy of a filed document?” and Eureka will link them to the California Business Search website where they can look up their business record and access documents for free. Eureka responds best to short questions or keywords. The California Secretary of State is the first state-level Department or Agency to use Microsoft’s Artificial Intelligence and bot services to modernize and create efficiencies when providing services to customers.

At a signing ceremony at Santa Clara University, California Secretary of State Alex Padilla announced a historic partnership between the Secretary of State’s office and the
Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU)
as part of the Secretary of State’s
California Student Vote Project
. With AICCU’s participation, all major institutions of higher education in California have solidified commitments to partner with the Secretary of State’s office and encourage student voter registration efforts.
AICCU colleges and universities include comprehensive research institutions, specialized professional schools, liberal arts institutions, faith-based schools, as well as campuses that focus on the arts and those that offer non-traditional study programs. They are at the forefront of new and expanding initiatives, including online courses, hybrid programs, and expedited degree programs for adult learners. In total, AICCU represents 78 campuses and about 330,000 students across the state.

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla announced the re-launch of the free, online “
Quick Guide to Props
” tool for voters. “Quick Guide to Props” provides voters a helpful list of the top ten campaign contributions, funding totals for each of the five statewide propositions, as well as a brief nonpartisan analysis. The campaign finance elements are dynamic and updated daily. This tool was developed in 2016 in partnership with MapLight, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization that tracks money in politics.
“Statewide ballot measures have a tremendous impact on the future of our state,” California Secretary of State Padilla said. “‘Quick Guide to Props’ provides voters with a simple and clear view of campaign finance data as well as nonpartisan analysis of the five measures that will appear on the June 5 Primary ballot. In an era where social media can powerfully inform and encourage, as well as misinform and discourage citizens from participating in elections, this tool demonstrates how technology can be used to assist voters in making more informed decisions.”

Conditional Voter Registration Allows Californians who Missed Traditional Deadline Another Opportunity to Register to Vote

There is a new option for Californians who missed the May 21 deadline to register or update their voter registration for the June 5, 2018, Statewide Direct Primary. A new option known as
conditional voter registration
allows eligible citizens to register and vote on the same day, today through Election Day.

Architect Alfred Eichler Featured in California State Archives latest Digital Exhibit

The California State Archives has launched its latest online exhibit: “Alfred Eichler: Art and Architecture in the Golden State.” This is the Archives’ newest exhibit to be hosted by Google Arts and Culture.
“Alfred Eichler’s imprint can be found across the Golden State,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. “The incredible diversity of styles Eichler used in his work—from brutalist to Spanish mission revival to midcentury modern—matches the diversity of the state he called home. The State Archives’ exhibit shines a light on how this prolific architect’s designs were embedded into so many facets of everyday life in 20
th
Century California.”
The architectural drawings and paintings featured in this exhibit were created by Alfred Eichler from 1925 to 1962. From painting to sketches, Eichler utilized a variety of styles and art media to create these pieces. The selections are drawn from the Alfred Eichler Collection, within the Architecture Division of the Department of Public Works records housed at the California State Archives.
Some iconic buildings designed and renovated by Alfred Eichler featured in this exhibit include:
- San Quentin Prison
- Camarillo State Hospital
- The Renovated Benicia State Capitol building
- Sacramento’s Tower Bridge
- Fort Yuma Quarantine Inspection Area
- Buildings that became part of the San Diego State and University of California, Santa Barbara campuses
