New tips and information from our

sustainable gardener experts

California friendly gardens and landscapes provide numerous benefits for the environment. Not only do California friendly landscapes result in reduced irrigation demand, but they also reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, restore soil health, and result in reduced maintenance needs. There is a wealth of information available on the web regarding California friendly landscaping.

For helpful tips and/or information please visit SBCCOG’s Environmentally Friendly Landscaping, Gardening and Pest Control page and/or attend one of our partner’s Eco Gardening classes featured in this newsletter.

SoCalREN provides clean EV options to consumers

Meet LA County’s newest clean transportation initiative: Southern California EVen Access!

SoCal EVen Access is LA County’s new portfolio of programs dedicated to clean mobility throughout the Los Angeles region. EVen Access is reducing the number of miles people travel in private fossil fuel-powered vehicles, limiting pollution and creating a cleaner environment for all.

One of SoCal EVen Access’ exciting new programs is Public Power-Up, which offers free electric vehicle (EV) charger installation for cities, school districts, and other public agencies serving disadvantaged communities in Los Angeles County. To be eligible, agencies must be enrolled in the Southern California Regional Energy Network (SoCalREN) Public Agency Programs and installation sites will need to have an active energy efficiency project with SoCalREN. SoCalREN offers cash incentives and no-cost technical support for energy efficiency projects. Learn more about SoCalREN here.

Another exciting new program is Multifamily Charge 4 All, which helps multifamily property owners in disadvantaged communities in Los Angeles County install EV chargers with up to $2,500 in incentives per electric vehicle charger, plus technical support and more. Multifamily Charge 4 All makes EV chargers more affordable, so you can add value to your property and prepare for future regulations around charging infrastructure. To be eligible, projects must be enrolled in the SoCalREN Multifamily Program and installation sites will need to have an active energy efficiency project with SoCalREN. LADWP and LASAN Announce Completion of

Key Pure Water Los Angeles Planning Documents

at Joint Board Meeting

At a joint meeting of the Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioners and the Los Angeles Board of Public Works Commissioners on March 25, 2025, the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP) and LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) jointly announced the completion of three key program planning documents for Pure Water Los Angeles, a water supply and resiliency initiative collaboratively developed by LADWP and LASAN to design, build, and operate an exceptionally advanced water purification system.

Pure Water Los Angeles aims to produce up to 230 million gallons of purified recycled water per day, creating a new, sustainable supply of drinking water and supporting the transition to a 70 percent local water supply.

The completion of these documents represents a collaborative process of over five years between LADWP and LASAN and marks the start of the next phase of Pure Water Los Angeles as the program moves into the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) environmental review period.

LACSD's Next Bixby Marshland Tour

Saturday, May 3

Bixby Marshland is open to the public for tours. Our next public open house will be on Saturday, May 3.

Did you know that in addition to operating wastewater and solid waste facilities, the Sanitation Districts own and maintain a marshland? Yes, it’s true! The Bixby Marshland, a 17-acre marsh, is located to the northwest of the A.K. Warren Water Resource Plant (formerly the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant) near the intersection of Figueroa Street and Sepulveda Boulevard in the City of Carson. The marsh was restored by the Sanitation Districts and reopened to the public in 2009. Now that the marsh has been rejuvenated, a large variety of plants, birds, fish, and animals call the Bixby Marshland home.

For more detailed information, please visit LACSD's Bixby Marshland page.

West Basin is in the Community for Earth Day Action

During this month of April, people all around the world are celebrating environmental stewardship in recognition of Earth Day, an annual event on April 22 that raises awareness about environmental issues and encourages action to protect the planet. West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin or District) is doing its part by participating in several Earth Day activities within its service area.

Across the globe, Earth Day is now observed in 192 countries. The theme this year is “Our Power, Our Planet,” signifying an invitation of unity behind renewable energy and to triple the global generation of clean electricity by 2030. So many organizations in the West Basin service area are increasing their engagement and support for this worldwide movement to encourage people to educate, advocate and mobilize toward a sustainable future. The District has received more than 50 requests for participation in community fairs and has committed to nearly 30 events this month across its five West Basin service divisions.

West Basin also continues to raise awareness year-round through water conservation and education programs that encourage water use efficiency and stewardship. The District is co-sponsoring a “Goodbye Grass, Hello Garden” class with Metropolitan Water District and Water Replenishment District (WRD) at the El Segundo Library on Friday, April 18, at 11 am. Guests who attend will learn how to remove lawn without the use of chemicals and replace it with climate-appropriate plants, and how to enroll in the District’s rebate program.

Additionally, the Rain Barrel event in Malibu has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 26 at Malibu City Hall, another WRD collaboration class at West Basin Headquarters on Tuesday, May 6, and a Firescaping workshop at Topanga Library on Thursday, May 8 in addition to five public tours, two Know Your H20 classes, and 12 scheduled school tours for students in grades 3-12.

The District also announced their increased grass removal rebate of $6 per square foot in qualified areas, plus FREE landscape design services! This is a great opportunity to get even more money back for replacing lawns with waterwise California native plants to conserve water. This program is open to anyone within the District service area and will end on June 30, 2025, or while supplies last.

Check out the West Basin activity calendar to learn about more upcoming community events in which West Basin will be attending or leading! We look forward to seeing you soon!
