EPA Launches Updated
Pesticide Registration Tracking App
| | |
On April 18, 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched its MyPest application. MyPest allows registrants of pesticide products to monitor the status of their pesticide registration submissions in real-time. Updates to MyPest include an enhanced dashboard page with information about the registrant’s cases and products, the ability to drill down into a highly detailed view of each application, and the capability to communicate with EPA staff directly within the application page.
Over 1,200 registrants have already signed up for MyPest. Additional updates planned for later this year include further enhancements to the user experience and detailed information on the progress of registration review cases and data call-ins.
Additional information from EPA on pesticide registration is available on EPA’s website or simply visit the South Bay Cities website and read more about Integrated Pest Management.

| | Learn About the Impact of the Watershed | | |
The Sanitation Districts are a proud partner of Think Watershed, a program that educates students about the watershed’s impact on the marine environment and inspires them to become stewards of the environment. The program is offered to students in Grades 4 through 6.
Students participating in Think Watershed will engage in hands-on activities to learn how human behavior affects the quality of air, water, and habitat. The centerpiece of Think Watershed is a floating lab boat trip, where students participate in marine science learning activities on a 3-hour cruise in Long Beach harbor. Other components include a teacher’s guide with classroom lessons.
Currently, funds are available for free field trips, including funding for both the boat trip and bus transportation. For more information and/or to see if your school qualifies, please contact the Public Information Office at info@lacsd.org or visit Think Watershed.

30 Years of Producing Recycled Water
| | |
West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin or District) is proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its recycled water program expertise and industry leadership. These three decades (1995-2025) of demonstrated water treatment ingenuity and financial investment into this highly sustainable resource expands their local water supply and reduces the demand for imported drinking water. Since its inception, the District has produced more than 265 billion gallons of recycled water, enough to fill more than 400,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
The extreme drought of the late 1980s and early 1990s compelled West Basin to establish a world-class recycled water treatment system to supplement limited drinking water supplies. In 1995, West Basin received state and federal funding to build a world-class water recycling facility, now known as the Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility (ECLWRF) in El Segundo. Today, West Basin operates five facilities including ECLWRF, the Hyperion Pump Station in Playa del Rey, and three satellite treatment plants in Carson, Torrance and El Segundo. Collectively, these facilities produce approximately 40 million gallons per day and more than 11 billion gallons annually, distributing water through a network of more than 100 miles of recycled water pipelines to nearly 600 connections. This system stands as the largest of its kind in the United States and is the only water recycling system in the world that produces five distinct types of recycled water tailored to municipal, commercial and industrial customer needs.
“Recycled water has a profound and far-reaching impact on communities in ways many people may not recognize,” said West Basin Board President and Division II Director Gloria Gray. “It serves as a drought mitigation resource, supports agriculture and industrial production, decreases wastewater discharge into the ocean, and can reduce water costs for cities and businesses, which can also impart economic savings for residents. Every drop of recycled water produced is a drop of imported drinking water saved.”
The District will be hosting 30th anniversary public tours at the ECLWRF throughout the rest of the year. For more information about the tours and West Basin’s acclaimed recycled water program, visit 30 years of Producing Recycled Water.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of man-made compounds, which include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), that have been manufactured and used around the globe since the 1940s. Because of their strong chemical bonds, PFAS were used in a variety of industries and consumer products, and can be found in the air, soil, drinking water supplies, water bodies, and livestock. PFAS are persistent in the environment, can accumulate within the human body over time, and can be toxic.
The PFAS Remediation Program is an essential part of WRD’s commitment to managing and protecting local groundwater resources. By acting quickly and supporting water purveyors in their remediation of PFAS-impacted wells, they not only provide safe drinking water, but also prevent unwanted substances from spreading throughout our vital drinking water aquifers and ensure an uninterrupted supply of high-quality groundwater at affordable rates. In addition, WRD continues to work with our State and Federal partners to secure funding to provide treatment for contaminated drinking water sources, especially for underserved communities, where well closures can significantly increase the cost of tap water.
