Explore Sustainable Pest Solutions
for a Healthier Summer
| |
Mosquitoes, cockroaches, aphids, weeds, and rodents are common pests that many residents encounter around their homes and gardens. While chemical pesticides may seem like a quick solution, they can pose risks to people, pets, beneficial insects such as bees and ladybugs, and important soil organisms like earthworms.
Improper use or disposal of pesticides can also impact local waterways, as rain can wash pesticide residues into storm drains that flow directly to creeks, lakes, and the ocean. By choosing safer pest management practices, residents can help protect their families, support healthy ecosystems, and reduce environmental pollution.

| | Beat the Heat and Save Energy This Summer | | |
As temperatures rise, so can energy bills. Fortunately, a few simple changes can help you stay comfortable while reducing energy use and saving money throughout the summer.
-
Adjust your thermostat: Set your thermostat a few degrees higher when you’re away from home to reduce cooling costs.
-
Use a programmable thermostat: “Smart” thermostats automatically adjust temperatures throughout the day to save energy.
-
Keep the sun out: Close your blinds and shades during the hottest parts of the day.
-
Seal air leaks: Check for gaps around and under doors and windows and seal them to prevent cool air from escaping.

Join WRD in Celebrating 20 Years
of the Eco Gardener Program
| | |
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the WRD Eco Gardener Program, celebrating two decades of inspiring the community to explore water conservation, cultivate gardens, and enjoy hands-on learning experiences that bring families and neighbors together.
The program was founded by former WRD Board Member Lillian Kawasaki, and following her passing in 2013, the WRD demonstration gardens were named in her honor. Over the years, the Eco Gardener Program has offered workshops on growing fruits and vegetables, supporting pollinators, and creating sustainable, welcoming gardens. Each session features expert-led instruction, hands-on demonstrations, and garden-themed giveaways.
Join WRD in celebrating this milestone by attending a workshop near you!
