SANITATION DISTRICTS PRODUCE A SAFE, AFFORDABLE SOURCE OF RECYCLED WATER

The Sanitation Districts own and operate one of the largest wastewater recycling programs in the world. They have an extensive history providing affordable, high-quality recycled water to help meet the water supply needs within the Sanitation Districts’ service area.

They have ten water reclamation facilities, which produce treated and disinfected recycled water, most of which meets drinking water standards. The recycled water is used at more than 880 sites for a variety of purposes.

They have partnered with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to purify treated water produced by Sanitation Districts very own Joint Water Pollution Control Plant.

RECORD RAINFALL ENSURES

WATER RESILIENCY FOR THE FUTURE

After the three driest years on record, the storms of 2023 brought welcomed moisture to the region. This year, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works captured around 57 billion gallons (176,000 acre-feet) of stormwater in the WRD service area. That is a year’s worth of water for about 350,000 families of four.

Each year, WRD works hard with our partners to get as much water into the ground as safely possible. To do this, stormwater is diverted into the Montebello Forebay spreading grounds. The spreading grounds are large ponds that allow water to soak into underground aquifers where it can be stored for future use.

CONSERVE NATURES MOST PRECIOUS RESOURCE THROUGH HARVESTING RAINWATER

Harvesting rain is a simple, low-cost way to save money on water bills, provide fresh, soft water for your plants, and be a steward of your local watershed.

The South Bay Rainwater Harvesting Program provides helpful information and resources for homeowners on how to capture rainwater for use in the garden, patio or other places on a property.

HELP FAMILIES SAVE MONEY THROUGH THE KITS FOR KIDS PROGRAM

The SoCalREN Kits for Kids Program introduces third and fourth-grade students to energy efficiency.

Participating schools perform an interactive scavenger hunt and receive energy-efficient items at no cost that can help their families save energy and money.

During the program each household installs the items in their home. Each enrolled classroom is eligible to receive a $1,000 grant if 65% of students provide proof of installation. Learn more here.
