Public Invited to Hear Metro's Plans for

for I-405/Wilmington Improvement Project

Metro has a plan to make it easier to get around L.A., with projects that improve mobility, accessibility and safety. The stretch of freeway on I-405 from Wilmington Avenue to Main Street experiences heavy traffic flow, with more than 300,000 vehicles traversing daily. This makes it one of the busiest sections in the L.A. area.

Metro is formally initiating studies for the I-405 from Wilmington Avenue to Main Street Improvements Project. It would like your input on the proposed project improvements, which include two build alternatives and one no-build alternative. The formal scoping period for the project will occur through Thursday, October 10th.

Metro invites you to attend a scoping meeting to learn more about the project.

Meeting #1 is tomorrow

Tuesday, September 17

noon-1:30 p.m.

Webinar link: bit.ly/405WilmingtonMeeting

Meeting #2 (in-person)

Thursday, September 19, 2024

6-7:30 p.m.

Carson Event Center

The scoping meetings will kick-off community involvement in the project and provide the opportunity for learning more about the project’s proposed alternatives, meet the project team, and provide comments. Visit: metro.net/405Wilmington for more information.

Master Sustainable Pest Management

Protect People and Pets While Managing Pests at Home

Nobody wants to share their home or garden with pests, but using chemical pesticides to manage them can be unhealthy and is often ineffective.

Fortunately, there are many effective sustainable pest management techniques that don’t include use of chemical pesticides.

Sustainable pest management avoids harming people, pets, beneficial garden insects, and aquatic life in our local creeks, lakes and ocean waters.

Three Tips for Sustainable Pest Management:

  1. Prevention is the key. Eliminating pest access to food, water and shelter in your home and garden will deter unwanted guests.
  2.  If pests do become a problem, deploy sustainable methods to control them before resorting to pesticides.
  3. If chemical control becomes necessary, follow best practices to protect human health and the environment.

West Basin Hosts Firescaping Workshop in Rancho Palos Verdes - Thursday, September 19

What is firescaping?

Firescaping uses landscaping techniques and native plants to protect your home from wildfires. These practices, along with smart irrigation systems can help safeguard your home, use less water, and save money on your water bill.

Why is firescaping important?

California has dry, windy and often hot weather conditions from spring through fall. These specific conditions in combination with climate change, can produce moderate to severe wildfires.

Firescaping allows you to:

  • Identify high-risk landscapes
  • Learn which plants and building materials help minimize damage
  • Get tips for reducing your fire risk
  • Make your home firefighter-accessible

Register here for the Firescaping Workshop. We hope to see you there!

Water Reuse Program

The Sanitation Districts own and operate one of the largest wastewater recycling programs in the world. They have a long history of providing affordable, high-quality recycled water to help meet the water supply needs within the Sanitation Districts’ service area.

Each day, the Sanitation Districts produce recycled water that is a safe, affordable and drought-resilient resource for residents and businesses. This water is used for industrial, commercial and recreational applications such as groundwater replenishment, agriculture irrigation, industrial processes, and irrigation of parks and schools.

Three Back-to-School Energy Tips

As kids return to school, families face different energy needs. Below are three energy adjustments to consider for your household.

  1. Lights Out - Since you’re home less, make sure to turn off and unplug all devices and turn off all lights when you leave the house to save energy.
  2. Go Electric - Choose ZEVs (zero-emission vehicles) for school commutes, including bikes and scooters. If picking up using a gas-powered car, turn off your ignition when idling to reduce harmful emissions.
  3. Time Energy Use - Try to limit energy use (washing clothes, AC usage, etc.) to the afternoon after school; this is when the grid is not at its highest demand (and most expensive).

Micromobility Legislative Tracker

Ever wonder how our legislators plan to address issues surrounding low-speed vehicles, mobility and traffic safety? In this legislative tracker feature (first featured in our Turtle Talk e-newsletter), we will spotlight a local, state or federal piece of legislation pertaining to low-speed travel in a quick, easy-to-understand explanation.

Assembly Bill 2583 authorized by Assemblymember Marc Berman, would lower school zone speed limits in California to 20 mph or less. It also authorizes local authorities to determine school zone time periods, rather than relying on "when children are present."

Research from the National Highway Safety Administrations shows that a pedestrian fatality is two times as likely when a person is struck by a vehicle moving at 25 mph. Lowering the school zone speed limit to 20 mph can significantly decrease the chances of severe injury and fatality among child pedestrians, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
