Friends of the Pantry –
Greetings from Centre Street! I hope you are enjoying a wonderful start to your spring.
I am proud to share that your support enabled us to respond quickly and purposefully when the federal government ended a range of pandemic-related benefits and restrictions and SNAP benefits were reduced on April 1st. Even though Governor Healey’s emergency budget passed to provide some financial relief, SNAP recipients still experienced a significant shortfall in dollars available to them in April. We felt compelled to act so that our clients (many of whom are SNAP recipients) could better “stretch” their limited SNAP dollars and have enough food. In April, we offered these supplemental options:
- We included frozen vegetables, fruits or an extra frozen protein in cold orders, thanks to our partnership with Star Market Chestnut Hill and Holden Produce.
- Kids Club bags were packed with more food that included at least two of the following items: pasta, rice, pancake mix & syrup, granola bars, canned fruit, soups or mac 'n' cheese.
- Families with children were offered an additional half gallon of fresh milk.
- Senior hour clients received a choice of coffee, black or green tea in addition to the regular cold order choices.
We were able to "stretch" our inventory capacity to help our neighbors at this time of unexpected need due to the generosity of our donors. The financial support we regularly receive from our community is what allows us to provide consistent and inclusive access to healthy food to all who visit us. Thank you for your support!
There's a lot more to read about in this month’s newsletter, including volunteer news, Kids Club opportunities and event updates so please read on and know that you are always welcome at Centre Street.
With gratitude,
Rose

DID YOU KNOW... YOU CAN REGISTER TO VOLUNTEER ON OUR NEW SYSTEM!
We are very excited to share that our new volunteer registration system, Get Connected, is up and operational. Thank you to our volunteers for being patient during the transition from the Volunteer Gopher. Good luck in your retirement, Gopher! You will be missed!
If you haven’t done so already, volunteers can register on the new system by creating an account here. Once set up, you can sign up for shifts, track your hours and view descriptions of opportunities that might interest you.
Not yet a Centre Street volunteer? We need you!
In 2022, over 250 volunteers logged a cumulative 8,590 hours, moved 800,000 pounds of food, and helped clients during all kinds of weather, as we served the largest number of households we've ever served in a year. As our organization continues to grow and serve more people, we need even more volunteers. Opportunities range from unloading boxes (if you’re looking for a good workout) to language translation (if you’re multilingual) to bringing bags to client cars curbside (if you like teamwork) to bag packing (great if you want to simultaneously listen to a podcast). The work is fulfilling, the camaraderie is fun, the mission is clear. Volunteering is a great way for students to gain service hours. Consider bringing your family or ask a friend to join you. We are immensely grateful to all who help us continue to serve our neighbors!
Want to learn more?
The Pantry’s next volunteer orientation is April 28, from 11:30 am to noon. Each informative session features a presentation where you will learn about CSFP's background, its mission, and best practices for how to interact with clients and each other. The sessions are hosted by current and former board members, with time for questions. We welcome any volunteer who hasn't attended before. Please contact Vikram, CSFP Board Member, if you would like join.

We are proud of our incredible marathon runner, Abbe Dalton Clark! She battled the changing weather and the Newton hills to finish this year’s Boston Marathon - raising $8,500 (and counting) for Centre Street Food Pantry! She finished the race in 5 hours and 27 minutes, completing her fifth of the six World Marathon Majors. Next up, Tokyo! Terrific job, Abbe! Thank you for all your hard work, time and training. If you’d like to add to Abbe’s Marathon total, it’s not too late! Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could raise $10,000?? Please visit her fundraising page on GivenGain and help us finish strong!

Thank You to an essential Centre Street Supplier.
SUPPLIER SPOTLIGHT:
HOLDEN FRUIT & PRODUCE
Holden Fruit & Produce is a family-owned, Chelsea-based business that provides fresh, quality produce to wholesalers and consumers. This month Holden donated hundreds of cases of individually packaged cooked sandwiches – hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken patties and breakfast croissants -- to Centre Street. We gave them to families of three or more people as part of our SNAP reduction response.
Holden has been a very reliable wholesale partner to Centre Street for years, frequently offering specials and donations, and never failing to meet a last-minute need. They were absolutely essential to our ability to maintain consistent access to healthy foods in 2022 by providing produce and proteins when the Greater Boston Food Bank was unable to due to their labor shortage.

RIDE FOR FOOD - FREE REGISTRATION IN MAY!
The annual Ride For Food is taking place on October 1, with registration opening in May. We are looking to grow Team CSFP this year, so please consider joining this fun event, and recruit a friend too! Last year, our team raised an amazing $43,439 to fight food insecurity, the third highest team total! Those dollars allowed Centre Street to offer overflowing bags of fresh produce, healthy proteins, needed staples and personal care items.
Would you like to be part of the CSFP team? Now is a great time to sign up. During the month of May, Centre Street will cover the usual $75 registration fee. This is a great opportunity to take part in an absolutely fantastic, fun day of raising awareness and funds – and getting some exercise! Please email CSFP Board President/Team Captain Taylor Lies for a promotion code prior to registering. You can also email Taylor with any questions.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Franklin Elementary School has been an awesome and long-standing supporter of Centre Street Food Pantry. We can’t thank the students, staff and families of the Franklin community enough. Recently, the school held a Kids Club food drive, organized by the Franklin PTO’s Families Organizing for Racial Justice (FORJ) Social Action committee. The drive collected an amazing 239 pounds of food. Thank you, Franklin Elementary!
We are always looking for additional partners for Kids Club. If your school, temple, church or organization would like to help with a Kids Club food drive, please contact Kira Freytag, CSFP Board Member.

EMPTY BOWLS - A WONDERFUL EVENING
The 6th Annual Empty Bowls fundraiser hosted by Lasell University was a runaway success! Each attendee received a beautiful, homemade ceramic bowl, in addition to a night full of memories. We’d like to thank Professor Deborah Baldizar and all the Empty Bowls student committee members for their hard work, creativity and support of our mission of serving healthy food to our communities. Also thank you to Mayor Fuller and Lasell University President Eric Turner, as well as many residents of Lasell Village, for attending. Those who attended are already looking forward to next year’s Empty Bowls. And we hope you can join us!

Please join us in welcoming Kira Freytag to Centre Street’s Board of Directors! Kira has been a regular volunteer at Centre Street since September 2021, Kids Club Program Coordinator since January 2022 and now also serves on the board as the Co-Chair of the Marketing & Fundraising Committee. She brings an extensive background in branding, strategic marketing and client management to her new role. During her career, she has worked with numerous well known companies, including Dunkin’, Pepsi, Christie’s, NetJets, ESPN, and Timberland, on their marketing efforts.
Kira resides in Newton Highlands with her husband and their two sons. “I first began working with CSFP when I was looking for local volunteer opportunities when my sons started elementary school. I was immediately drawn in by the energy and commitment of the Centre Street team, as well as by knowing that the Pantry is making a tangible impact on the lives of people right in our community.”
You’ll see Kira at Centre Street during Tuesday volunteer hours – packing bags, fetching orders or snapping photos for our social media posts!
Welcome, Kira!

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT THE STATE HOUSE?
At the end of March, Governor Healey signed a $338 million supplemental budget that includes critical resources to help families across the state. This bill was initiated in reaction to the termination of federal pandemic-related benefits and restrictions. The bill ensures that Massachusetts can continue to offer free school meals to all children through the end of the current 2022-2023 academic year. This is a pivotal step in not only alleviating childhood hunger, but also the stigma associated with food insecurity, which often prevents families from seeking assistance. Governor Healey's bill additionally provides “off ramp” funds equal to 40% of the previous federal benefit for three months for SNAP recipients whose federal benefits were reduced. Centre Street Food Pantry applauds Governor Healey for her efforts on this critical front in fighting food insecurity. At the same time, we recognize that "off ramp" funds are only available through June and access to school meals will be limited in the summer, so we anticipate that there will be families at risk of hunger this summer. In keeping with our mission, and with your help, we will consistently provide healthy food to our neighbors to help offset this compounded reduction.
