Presentation and Discussion of Proposed Plans for 750 Walnut Avenue/Hartz Mountain Property

Thursday, May 6th, 2021
7 – 8 pm

I invite residents to join me for an Indian Village neighborhood discussion about the proposed Redevelopment Plan for the Hartz Mountain site. This is an opportunity to view the proposed plan, ask questions and offer your input. I will be joined by Township Attorney Ryan Cooper and Topology Planner Annie Hindenlang.

Hopefully, future meetings can be in-person but the May 6th event will be virtual. It will be shown and repeated on TV35 and TV35 Facebook for those unable to participate that night. The presentation will include a question and answer period via telephone and the phone number to be provided during the broadcast.

News from Township Committee Meetings
Workshop Meeting 4.26.21 / Official Meeting 4.27.21
  • Temporary closure of a portion of Eastman Street: After being notified by the NJ Dept. of Transportation the street could not be closed for use by local businesses because it is within 150 ft of a State highway (North Avenue) the Township passed a Resolution requesting the NJ DOT review the Township’s request since North Avenue in the downtown functions as a local road with pedestrian crosswalks, 25 MPH speed limit, traffic signals and to public plazas (Eastman and Post Office).
  • In addition, the Township is using a section of the State Statute regarding Special Business Improvement Districts to introduce an ordinance designating a portion of Eastman Street as a pedestrian mall. A second reading on the Ordinance will be at the May 11th meeting.
  • Conservation Center: Approved issuing two car stickers per household upon request (no additional fee) for families who may alternate cars for dropping off materials. The new stickers will include vehicle license plate number and can be purchased at the Conservation Center or by clicking here.
  • Authorized the Food Waste Collection Program so residents can drop off food waste in a dedicated bin set up for vegetables, fruits, meats, seafood (except shells), dairy and grains. Food waste can be left in any type of packaging excluding glass containers and black plastic bags. The food waste will be turned into bio-fuel to help power the Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority and reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills.
  • Voted on a Resolution to express opposition to the increased number of low flying aircraft over Cranford and asking the Flight Standards Office – Federal Aviation Administration restore flight patterns routes approved prior to May 2018. The Resolution and Letter from the Mayor will also be sent to US Senators Robert Menendez and Cory Booker, Congressman Tom Malinowksi and mayors of neighboring towns.
  • Authorized advertising for bids for General Contracting Services for the 375 Centennial Avenue Recreational facility.
  • Personnel:
  • Accepted resignations from Rich Belluscio, Construction Code Official, who accepted a position in Roselle Park; Heather Capone, Deputy Municipal Clerk, who accepted a position in Long Branch as Municipal Clerk
  • Accepted retirement of Jeanne McComb, Police Records Division, after a long career with the Township.
  • Appointed Frank Genova as Acting Construction Code Official.
  • Members of the Township Committee acknowledged the contribution and service of these employees and wished them well in their new positions.

Recreation and Parks
Playgrounds

Littering playgrounds with trash and empty plastic water bottles is unacceptable. Our playgrounds are for everyone’s use. The Recreation Dept. has stepped up maintenance but we need everyone to do their part. We hope these eye-catching signs get attention.
