COVID-19 Case Update (as of 10/21/2020)

  • CRANFORD: 22 active cases, 4 new in community / 583 total (0 new fatalities / 97 total)
  • UNION COUNTY: 19,044 cases (1,197 fatalities / 167 probable)
  • NJ: 223,223 cases (14,456 fatalities / 1,789 probable)

These figures represent the cumulative number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 and fatalities. For more detailed information visit www.covid19.nj.gov. The State Information Hub, updated daily, has details about contact tracing, testing sites, travel advisories, permitted openings, regulations, resources and more.
We’ve had questions about the Township’s reporting of confirmed COVID-19 cases, so in our sincere effort to keep residents informed and still respect personal, confidential information, we want to explain.

Early in the Pandemic, the Township received information on confirmed cases and fatalities daily and it was published in the Township’s special newsletter sent every weekday. The newsletter switched to three times a week mid-summer and is now weekly. However, the COVID-19 updates are posted on the Township’s Facebook page Monday and Friday, unless there is a holiday or Township doesn’t get a report.

Q. Where does Township get information from?
A. The Township is part of the Bloomfield Health Department shared services group that provides data about confirmed positive cases in Cranford, Union County, and New Jersey.

Q. Why do some other towns provide ages and other information about positive cases? Why is Cranford refusing?
A. Reporting from Health Departments in the State vary, with some providing more and some less information, but all following privacy and HIPAA laws. Cranford is not refusing to keep residents informed. We have been diligent and as open as possible about providing information. Cases in Cranford schools are also reported directly to parents with an indication of whether it involved the high school or elementary schools.

Q. Why do numbers of cases seem to change?
A. Occasionally, further investigation will reveal that a positive case or death is someone who does or does not live in Cranford and stats are adjusted. That’s why simply adding cases from one newsletter or post to another may not always add up.

Q. Why doesn’t the Township report number of active cases and number of people in the hospital or on ventilators?
A. Since late August we have been including the number of active cases. The Township does not get information about hospitalizations or ventilator use specific to Cranford. Statewide information is available on the NJ Dashboard.

We hope this information is useful.
Cranford Set to Enhance Public Information with New Newsletter

As subscribers to this newsletter, you probably noticed that since June we expanded from solely a COVID-19 Update to a more general information newsletter. We will launch our new Cranford Township News with updates from Township Committee meetings, official information from Township Departments, Boards and Committees, as well as meeting calendars and useful links. The newsletter will be done twice a month on the Thursday following the Township Committee meetings with special editions, if necessary.

I have been writing this newsletter since March and I hope we were able to keep residents informed during these extraordinary and uncertain times. One of my 2020 goals was improving public information overall and publishing a newsletter to provide residents with official and up-to-date information.

Residents have a right to ask questions. Township officials have an obligation to provide timely and correct information. We won’t always get it right, but those serving Cranford as elected officials, employees, or as volunteers on Boards and Committees value public service and their responsibility to provide you with facts. Thank you for reading and helping our effort by sharing the newsletter with neighbors and friends.
