UNIVERSITY OF HAIFA ACHIEVES HIGH ACADEMIC RANKINGS
The Faculty of Education, the Department of Communications (in the Herta and Paul Amir Faculty of Social Sciences ) and the Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences have achieved high rankings in the prestigious Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects .

The Faculty of Education is in the 76-100 ranking; the leader amongst Israeli universities and higher than Yale, Cambridge, Helsinki and Brown. It is 42 in the global ranking in the field of Communications, and is the only Israeli University in the ranking of the leading 200 universities in the field of Marine Sciences.
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN COVID-19 & THE FLU
Dr. Manfred Green, Director of the University of Haifa’s International Master’s Program in Public Health and Global Health Leadership, recently clarified the stark and important differences between influenza and COVID-19. He outlines the variances of each -- detailing the virus that causes each disease, how they behave, the symptoms, and the death rate.

Dr. Green explained: "At face value, there are some similarities. In the early stages, many cases are asymptomatic. And, when symptoms do appear, they have a few in common such as sore throat, fever, and cough. But that’s only at the beginning. Afterwards, we see stark and important differences." Read more
EXPERTS WARN OF PTSD AFTER SERIOUS COVID-19 INFECTION
The COVID Trauma Response Working Group, which includes mental health experts from the University of Haifa, King’s College London, University College London, Oxford University, and the UK's National Health Service, said those who have been admitted in intensive care would have been seriously ill enough to develop PTSD, and urged the British government for a national screening program.

“Given the very frightening and invasive nature of the Covid-19 critical care experience, the imminent risk of death and the potential for long-term medical complications, those most severely affected by Covid-19 are likely to be at high risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder and other stress-related mental health difficulties,” Dr. Michael Bloomfield from University College London, said. DECODING THE FIRST NON-HUMAN LANGUAGE
University of Haifa professor Dan Tchernov, who heads The Mediterranean Sea Research Center of Israel (MERCI), has been invited to collaborate on a major initiative – the sperm whale communication project CETI (Cetacean Echolocation Translation Initiative). The project includes experts from Harvard, MIT, Imperial College, UC Berkeley, and the Institute for Scientific Interchange.

The world's largest predator and highly intelligent sperm whale helps keep carbon out of the atmosphere, supports our oxygen supply, and increases marine life. We now have the tools to identify and translate the deep structure of the whales' communicative patterns and to kickstart the path towards meaningful dialogue with another species.
