Metra: Changes Coming February 1

Starting next week, the Roselle Metra station will no longer have an agent selling tickets at the ticket window. Metra tickets will be available for purchase through the Ventra app. Metra aims to install ticket vending machines at every station this year.

Metra is also implementing new fares starting February 1. Metra's new fare schedule reduces the number of zones from 10 to 4. Roselle's Metra station is located in Zone #4.

In addition to the new fares, Metra is replacing their 10-Ride Ticket with a Day Pass 5-Pack. Monthly passes will go on sale in the Ventra app on February 1. View Metra's website for more information on new fares and other changes.

Q: How will the referendum affect CIS rates?

CIS rates will reach $20 by 2032 without home rule sales tax revenue to go towards mandated wastewater improvements. This means in 2032, the average resident could pay about $86 a month in CIS fees, or over $1,000 per year.

Revenue from a home rule sales tax would allow the Village to reduce reliance on CIS fees to fund mandated wastewater improvements, allowing residents to spend 50-60% less on CIS fees by 2032. View this post to compare CIS rates over time

Q: Why do CIS costs trend lower with more home rule sales tax revenue?

With a higher sales tax rate, more revenue is collected per transaction. For example, a 1% home rule sales tax could provide $3.5 million in additional, annual revenue for mandated improvements, while a 1.5% home rule sales tax could generate more than the minimum $4.5 million in additional, annual revenue needed.

Under home rule, both CIS fees and home rule sales tax revenue would go towards mandated wastewater improvements. As more sales tax revenue is earned and can be directed to the Water/Sewer Capital Projects Fund, less revenue is needed from CIS fees.
