walks. These walks, which encourage participants to meet the challenge of being active at least thirty minutes per day, take place in our park during our weekly Farmer's Markets, and begin at 5:00 p.m.
Please come out and support our vendors as you shop for your weekly provisions, while, at the same time, pursuing an active lifestyle by participating in our walks.
People who attend at least five of the weekly walks will have their names entered into a drawing to win a Fitbit fitness tracker. This drawing will take place during the month of September.

"Big Boy" Steam Locomotive Chugs through Wadsworth-
Hundreds of railroad enthusiasts, model train collectors, and everyday onlookers from all over Lake County and beyond lined up along the Union Pacific Railroad's train tracks on Friday, July 26, to observe and experience a historic event
as the Engine No. 4014 "Big Boy" steam locomotive
rolled and rumbled through the Village of Wadsworth. The train, which had left Butler, Wisconsin at about 8:00 a.m. that morning, traversed the Village around 10:00 a.m. as it made its way to a grand welcoming event in West Chicago.
The recently restored 78-year old Union Pacific Railroad engine, affectionately known as the "Big Boy", traveled throughout our area as part of the Railroad's Great Race Across the Midwest. This promotional event celebrated the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, a feat that finally connected the United States from east to west, via railroad, for the first time. Accordingly, travel at that time, that used to take close to six months, was reduced to two weeks!
Many sightseers and spectators arrived early to set up their lawn chairs and cameras along the track, and then waited patiently for the historic train engine to pass by, pulling 10 cars colored bright yellow and silver. Folks came from all over the country to see this "Big Boy". For example, at the intersection of 21st Street and the Union Pacific Railroad line, there was a father and son from New York State who had followed this locomotive throughout the train's entire 2019 journey. The rumbling, hissing, smoking, and whistling train engine did not disappoint. As the engine chugged by at 50 m.p.h., children cheered, dogs barked, and cameras clicked.
According to the Union Pacific Railroad's website, Engine No. 4014 is one of 25 "Big Boys" that were built especially for the railroad in 1941. This massive machine, one of the largest operating steam locomotives in the world, is 132 feet long and weighs 1.2 million pounds. The engine was originally designed to pull heavy freight trains across the mountainous areas in Wyoming and Utah. This train was finally retired in 1961, after logging more than one million miles during its 20-year working life. The Union Pacific Railroad subsequently reacquired this engine from a California railroad museum in 2013 and began restoring it.
The "Big Boy", after gracing Wadsworth with its historic presence, continued through Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska, and then ended its journey on August 8, 2019, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the train engine's home base.

NTHS Rummage Sale-
Please consider renting space at the Newport Township Historical Society's (NTHS) upcoming rummage sale. Participation in this event is open to both residents and non-residents. The applicable fee is only $10 for a 10 foot x 10 foot rental area. The $10 rental fee will go to support the Historical Society. You may sell your own items and keep the remaining proceeds.
This year, the sale will be held in Wadsworth Community Park, which is adjacent to the Wadsworth Village Hall, and is located at 14155 West Wadsworth Road, Wadsworth, IL.
The date for the sale is Saturday, September 7, 2019. The event will run from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. As a vendor, you can begin to set up your table and wares at 7:00 a.m. Each vendor must bring his or her own table, set up the items for sale, do the subsequent clean up, and, finally, bring home all unsold items.
Please contact Kevin or Margie, at 262-694-0596, to reserve your space. Note that we must enlist a minimum of 10 participants, with a maximum of 30, in order to go forward with the rummage sale. Payment will be collected on the day of the sale. In the case of rain, the sale will be cancelled.

Scammers Targeting Lake County Residents-
The Lake County Sheriff's Office recently reported that it has seen an increase in the number of residents becoming the victims of computer repair company-based scams. In such a scenario, a scammer will call a resident and claim that he or she is employed by a computer repair company and that money was "
accidentally
" deposited into the resident's bank account. The scammer will then advise the resident that the only way that the improperly deposited money can be "repaid" to the repair company is for the resident to purchase a large sum of gift cards, often from a Walmart or Target store, and to then give the scammer the applicable confidential gift card numbers over the telephone. The scammer will often stay on the telephone with the resident during the entire scamming process.
Beware that companies and government entities are NOT paid with gift cards.
Furthermore, do NOT allow anyone that you do not personally know to persuade you to download an unknown computer program to your computer.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public to be suspicious of people calling them to obtain money or gift cards.

2019 Wadsworth Area Pageant-
This year's Wadsworth Area Pageant is scheduled for Sunday, September 8, at 2 p.m., at the Shanty Restaurant. Applications are now available on the Village's website and are due by September 1st. We encourage area girls between the ages of 6 and 21 to participate in this wonderful program and to compete for the titles of Miss Wadsworth, Junior Miss Wadsworth, and Little Miss Wadsworth. | Fall Festival and Pig Roast-
All are welcome to attend this year's Fall Festival and Pig Roast, which will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in Wadsworth Community Park. Come out to
enjoy great food and beverages, music that will get you on your feet, invigorating hayrides with views of the newly renovated playground, and a bonfire to warm you should the evening get chilly!
The food and beverages for the evening will be provided by Bauer's Catering and also by The Shanty. In addition to the great food and beverages, live music will be offered by a favorite band from last year, Brass from the Past. And, to make the event even more attractive, Patch 22 will provide horse-drawn hayrides. Finally, there will be a grand bonfire to cap off the event and to light up the evening sky.

Building and Zoning Matters-
Recreational Cannabis Zoning Code Text Amendments
The Village of Wadsworth Zoning Board of Appeals/Plan Commission (ZBA/PC) will be conducting a public hearing regarding the addition of zoning regulations pertaining to the regulation of cannabis business establishments in town. This public hearing will take place on Monday, August 19, at 7:00 p.m., at the Village Hall. The public hearing will consider amendments to the Village's Zoning Ordinance regarding the regulation of such businesses (that is, location, operation, and performance standards, etc.). Note that the ZBA/PC also has the option to recommend that the Village Board not permit such businesses in town.
Solar Power Facilities
The Village of Wadsworth is seeing more building permit requests related to the installation of either roof-mounted or ground-mounted solar panel arrays upon one's private property to serve their homes and non-residential building(s). The Village has already adopted rules regarding such facilities, which may be found on our website by clicking

If you are interested in installing solar panels on your home or building, then please provide your contractor with the attached informational packet, which outlines the installation and zoning rules regarding such facilities, as well as the permit application requirements.
