Coastal Jazz Wires $75,000 Kendrick Inaugural Stakes

Rockingham Ranch’s Coastal Jazz went gate-to-wire to capture his first stakes victory—and the first stakes win for a Washington-bred runner in 2025—in Sunray Park’s Kendrick Inaugural Stakes on April 19.

Ridden by Luis Valenzuela, the Justin Evans trainee broke on top and was never headed in the 6 1/2-furlong race. Coastal Jazz, the $2.30-to-one race favorite, drew off to win by 3 1/2 lengths over Onwaimo Bustamante-Hernandez’s six-year-old Gun Runner gelding, who finished second. Alfred Alvarado’s seven-year-old Curlin gelding Bender finished another 1 1/4 lengths back in third.

It marked the 14th win in 45 starts for the seven-year-old Coast Guard gelding, who was voted last year’s Washington Most Improved Plater after winning four races, earning $84,011, and placing second in Turf Paradise’s Hank Mills Jr. Overnight Stakes.

Bred by Nina and Ron Hagen at their Enumclaw-based El Dorado Farms, Coastal Jazz is a full brother to the $173,939 stakes-placed filly You Go Girl. Both are out of the Artax mare Jasmine’s Melody, who finished third to Washington champion Enumclaw Girl in Emerald Downs’ 2008 U.S. Bank Stakes and earned $79,889 for owner Frank L. Gaunt. Jasmine’s Melody’s most recently recorded foal is an unnamed three-year-old Barkley colt.

Coastal Jazz was purchased by trainer Blaine Wright for Gold Coast Racing for $28,000 at the 2019 WTBOA Summer Sale. The gelding, who also ran second in an allowance/$40,000 optional claiming race at Turf Paradise on April 30, has now earned $276,704, including $65,250 in 2025.

2025 Oregon Fair Summer Racing Dates

The dates for the Oregon fair meets have been announced. Eastern Oregen Livestock Show (EOLS), Union, June 6-8; Southern Oregon Horse Racing Association (SOHRA), Grants Pass, June 14-15, 21-22, June 28-29 and July 4-5; Crooked River Roundup, Prineville, July 9-12; and Tillamook, August 6-9.

Freshman Stallion Raging Tiger Sires First Winner

Oakhurst Thoroughbreds’ first-crop stallion Raging Tiger sired his first winner on April 30 when his two-year-old daughter Diva in Motion won a 4 1/2-furlong maiden/$30,000 optional claiming race by three-quarters of a length in her second start. She had previously finished fourth behind fellow Washington-bred winner Code of Valor in an April 10 Turf Paradise Open Futurity trial.

Raging Tiger is a handsome bay son of European Horse of the Year Giant’s Causeway. A six-time Group 1 winner in England, Ireland, and France who earned over $3 million, Giant’s Causeway is the sire of more than 100 graded/group stakes winners, including 12 international champions among over 260 black-type winners. Among his best sons at stud are champion Shamardal, Now Is the Time, Brody’s Cause, Footstepsinthesand, Carpe Diem, Eskendereya, and Giant Oak.

Raging Tiger was foaled in 2015 and bred by Oregonian Dr. Rodney Orr out of his Emerald Downs stakes winner Shandra Smiles, who passed away in March at age 27.

The daughter of Cahill Road, Shandra Smiles produced three stakes winners among her six winners—all by sons of Storm Cat, as is Raging Tiger. Tops among them is Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly She’s a Tiger, a daughter of Tale of the Cat who earned $727,657 and is now a graded stakes producer in Japan.

Shandra Smiles also produced top sprinter Smiling Tiger, a three-time Grade 1 winner and $1,480,704 earner by Hold That Tiger, who was a leading sire in California until his death in 2024.

Her third stakes winner, and a full sister to Raging Tiger, is Smiling Causeway, a multiple stakes winner of $300,860.

Raging Tiger, who stands at the Root family’s Oakhurst Thoroughbreds in Newberg, Oregon, has four additional foals in his first crop. He stands for a 2025 breeding fee of $1,000.

In Memoriam

LaMar Senter Efaw

LaMar S. Efaw, 82, passed away in early 2025. He was one of four children born to Fred S. and Verna (Grosgebauer) Efaw.

LaMar met Marlys Lucille Hoagland in the fourth grade in Astoria, Oregon, and from then on, they were inseparable. They dated at Astoria High School and in college before marrying on August 7, 1965.

LaMar graduated with a B.S. in Interior Architecture from the University of Oregon in 1967. Marlys graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in physical education.

The couple traveled to the East Coast and 13 countries in Europe before settling in Seattle in 1968.

Together they established their interior design firm, LaMar Efaw Interiors, Ltd., in April 1971. LaMar served as president and Marlys as vice president and office manager. An award-winning designer, LaMar and his firm offered commercial, hospitality, and residential interior design and remodeling services.

Each of their homes was unique and welcoming to friends, family, and clients.

LaMar was a member of the American Society of Interior Designers, and his company was considered one of the Top 40 interior design firms in Seattle.

LaMar Efaw Interiors, Ltd. was also a sponsor of exhibits at the Museum of Northwest Art and the San Juan Islands Museum of Art.

Though they chose not to have children, Marlys and LaMar treasured their many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

The couple also cherished their racehorse, Mr. LaMar, a 1985 winning Washington-bred gelding by Drouilly (Fr), throughout his 30-year life. In addition, they raised and owned several other Thoroughbred racehorses.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys (April 2, 2022), and his brother, Fred G. Efaw. LaMar is survived by his sisters, Fredene Rogers and Karin Efaw; and many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Duane Fredrick Hopp

Dr. Duane Hopp, 83, passed away on March 25, 2025, after a lengthy illness. He was born on June 20, 1941, at the then newly opened National Naval Medical Center, now known as Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, in Bethesda, Maryland. His father, Dr. Fredrick Hopp, was an Army MD. His mother, Grace Calkins, was born in Auburn, Washington, while his father hailed from Bridgeport, on the eastern side of the state. After traveling around the world with the military, the Hopp family settled in Yakima.

After graduating from Eisenhower Senior High School, Duane spent one year at Yakima Valley College before transferring to the University of Washington, where he was a member of the nationally ranked rowing team. After graduation, Duane entered the University of Washington School of Medicine and earned his medical degree in 1967. Among those who recommended him was the late Dr. John “Jack” Lein. Both men would later serve on the WHBA/WTBOA Board of Directors.

Duane completed a year-long internship at Philadelphia General Hospital and then joined the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. While in the Army, he completed an orthopedic residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado, and served at medical facilities in Wounded Knee, South Dakota; at Children’s Orthopedic in Phoenix; and as Chief of Orthopedics at Fort Dix in New Jersey (now part of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, JB MDL).

After retiring from the service, Duane established a private practice in Puyallup and was affiliated with Good Samaritan Hospital for 25 years. It was there, in 1977, that he met his future wife, Susan Gretler, who was working as a radiology technician. They were married on December 8, 1979, by a justice of the peace in Las Vegas. Their son Tim was born in 1980. Tim works for the National Parks Department and is currently stationed at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. He wrote the Washington Racing Hall of Fame story on Chinook Pass for Washington Thoroughbred.

The Hopps purchased the first piece of Graham property that would become their picturesque 70-acre Castlegate Farm shortly after their marriage. They have bred, raised, and pinhooked many outstanding racehorses through the WTBOA Sales.

Duane was well-respected for his keen eye in evaluating weanlings.

Their first pinhook was 1998–2000 Emerald Downs stakes winner Thetruthisoutthere. Others included 2014 Washington champion 2-year-old Trackattacker (bred), 2002 Emerald Downs Horse of the Meet Flying Notes (pinhook), three Gottstein Futurity winners—Horatio (2001, bred), Condotierri (2002, bred), and Race Home (2019, pinhook)—and 2002 Riley Allison Futurity winner Sum Trick (co-bred). Additional stakes winners included Skewing (bred), Sterling Bridge (pinhook), and Tougherthansantherest (2024 Emerald Downs stakes winner, pinhook).

Trackattacker, Horatio, and Flying Notes all set track records at Emerald Downs.

The Hopps also bred 1997 Washington Plater of the Year Briartic Blast, and Washington’s Most Improved Platers Blackcomb Run (2009) and Among the Stars (2015), and sold the 2021 WTBOA sale-topper, Termsofengagement, a Liam’s Map gelding.

Their motto was “For the love of great horses.”

The Hopps have been WTBOA members since 1985, and Duane served on the WTBOA Board of Directors from 1998 through 2022.

He was predeceased by his sister, Elaine. Duane is survived by his wife of 46 years, Susan; and son, Tim.

 Kay Darlene Kasmerski

Kay Kasmerski, 88, passed away on May 12, 2025, at Emerald Care in Yakima. She had been in hospice care for the last couple of months.

She was born on January 14, 1937.

Kay married Len Kasmerski on December 12, 1964, and they were together for 55 years until his death in May 2020.

Len became a successful trainer in Washington and California. Among his best horses were 2016 Washington Racing Hall of Fame inductee Loto Canada, Grade 3 winner Northern Causeway, and eight-time stakes winner Mr. Easy Money.

Kay worked as a waitress and hostess at Yakima Meadows and for the Yakima School District’s hot lunch program. She was also employed as an usher at Emerald Downs during the 1996 through 2010 seasons.

The couple loved horses and especially enjoyed being involved with the mares and foals. They were proud of their broodmare Sendosha, who was voted Washington Broodmare of the Year in 1997.

She was predeceased by her husband, Len; and daughters, Kim and Kari.

Kathy “Nancy” Walsh

Washington Racing Hall of Fame trainer Kathy Walsh, 85, passed away on May 8, 2025, in Chico, California. She was born Kathleen Walsh on March 18, 1940, in Sonoma, California, one of five children raised by Jim and Nonie Walsh. Her family nickname was “Nancy,” but professionally, she opted to use “Kathy.”

In October 1963, Jim, Ed, and Kathy purchased Green Valley Farm in Mabton, where they stood stallions like Deer Lodge and Space Commander. When their father passed away, Ed chose to remain in the Yakima Valley to run the farm and primarily to breed and train horses, while Kathy took over the stable and began to travel. Ed would go on to become an eight-time leading trainer at Yakima Meadows.

According to Kathy, she didn’t initially intend to become a trainer. After high school, she enrolled in college, but when her father suffered another heart attack, she began working as his licensed assistant in 1962. Upon his death in 1970, she took over his stable and finished third in the Longacres training standings that year. Her cousin Tommy Farrell also assisted her during her early years.

One of her mentors was renowned California trainer Buster Millerick, a close friend of her father’s. Among her early clients was Longacres founder Joe Gottstein. Kathy also trained for recent Washington Hall of Fame owner Paskey DeDomenico, who was a close family friend.

She was a consummate horsewoman and was nicknamed “The Queen” early in her career. Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith once said, “She was a great horsewoman . . . someone you wanted to ride for all the time.”

After finishing second in the Longacres standings in 1971, Kathy earned four training titles (1972–73, 1976, and 1978) at the Renton track. Her father had claimed titles there in 1967 and 1969. She was only the second female trainer—after fellow Hall of Famer Frances Keller—to lead the Longacres standings.

Kathy married Robert N. Hutchinson in 1980 and stepped away from training for a few years. Hutchinson, who passed away in 2000, shared her passion for racing; both he and his father had been partners in Longacres.

On the recommendation of Santa Anita racing secretary Lou Eilken, Kathy went to Canterbury Downs (now Park), where she became the leading trainer in 1988. The Walsh-trained Turbo Launch is in the Minnesota track’s Hall of Fame. As of 2024, she still ranks sixth in track history by win percentage (22.98%) and eighth in top-three placings (52.15%).

Another top performer trained by Walsh was 1986–87 Washington champion Staff Riot, a Grade 3 winner at Ak-Sar-Ben.

Among her many leading Washington runners were 1979 state champion 2-year-old filly Patient Madam, and stakes winners Havadasher, Whoa Boy, Auguste, Tilt the Balance, Weatherlock, Sid Racer, Say Prince, Cascade Katie, Any Time Lady, Nell of the North, No More Lemons, Discover Space, Patient Lou, Malert, Senate Appointee, Lisbio, Happy Olympian, and Little Joker.

She earned the Steve O’Donnell Memorial (now Martin Durkan) Award at Longacres in 1979.

After training in California and the Midwest, she returned to Longacres for its final two seasons and tallied 12 stakes wins, including eight in 1992 with Dr. Pain, Ice in Space, Scorned Timber, and Lordy Nelly.

Back in California, Walsh won 15 graded stakes, including a Grade 1 victory with Nany’s Sweep in 2001. She also won the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity with Georgie Boy (whose dam was a Washington-bred stakes winner) in 2007. Georgie Boy was named California champion 2-year-old male. Her other graded winners included Devious Boy (GB), Sarah’s Secret, Evening Promise (GB), and Mantles Star (GB).

Hanuman Highway (Ire) ran second by a head to Victory Gallop in the Grade 2 Arkansas Derby and later finished seventh for Budget Stable in the 1998 Kentucky Derby (G1), making Kathy only the eighth woman to saddle a Derby starter.

She was the godmother of trainer and Pegasus Training Center director Mike Puhich, whose father, Nick, first dubbed her “The Queen.”

Her brother Ed once said, “She was awful slow with horses, and by that I mean she wouldn’t run them until they were ready. She was always good at determining where to run a horse.”

From 1950 until her final race on October 3, 2021, she saddled 8,023 runners with a 1,231-1,076-990 record and $19,373,724 in earnings. In her last two years at the track, she had just ten starts, with her final win coming on March 6, 2020, with Elite Motion at Santa Anita.

Hall of Fame rider Gary Stevens recalled, “She called the shots and demanded her owners let her make the vital decisions in the stable.” Zoe Cadman, a former exercise rider and longtime friend, said, “She loved her horses, cussed like a sailor, and tolerated people.” Smith added, “She led a wonderful life. She wouldn’t have traded her life for anybody.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Nonie; sister, Bessie; brothers, Willie and Rusty; sister-in-law, Pat; and cousins, Tommy and Shirley Farrell. Kathy is survived by her brother, Ed; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

A race will be run in her honor on June 8 at Santa Anita.
