Shoghi Effendi refers to the Kitab-i-Aqdas as "the principal repository of that Law which the Prophet Isaiah had anticipated, and which the writer of the Apocalypse had described as the 'new heaven' and the 'new earth,' as 'the Tabernacle of God,' as the 'Holy City,' as the 'Bride,' the 'New Jerusalem coming down from God,' this 'Most Holy Book,' whose provisions must remain inviolate for no less than a thousand years. . . ." He adds that it "may well be regarded as the brightest emanation of the mind of Baha'u'llah, as the Mother Book of His Dispensation, and the Charter of His New World Order". . . .

How to Study the Baha'i Writings

Faculty: Sandra Hutchison

Just $75 for individuals, $150 for groups of up to six!

Duration of course: Five weeks (Jan. 20 - Feb. 25, 2012)

This five-week abbreviated version of our longer course on How to Study the Baha'i Writings is designed to introduce students to a method of studying the Baha'i scriptures systematically by using a number of literary and exegetical tools. In the course we will study selected passages from Baha'i scripture through four "windows" into the meaning of divine wisdom: Language; Theme; Structure; and the Work as a whole. Through learning to read carefully, with attention to figurative language, theme, structure, and the place of the work in the author's writings, we will develop tools for analyzing any Baha'i text systematically.

Century of Light
Lead Faculty: Zaid Lundberg
Faculty: Ed DiLiberto and Graham Hassall

Duration of course: Seven weeks (Feb. 1 - Mar. 20, 2012)

`Abdu'l-Baha referred to the twentieth century as the "century of light" while also forecasting terrible trials for humanity and events of great consequence for humanity's future. In 2001 the Universal House of Justice released a historical study of the century, noting that between 1900 and 2000 "our world underwent changes," mostly little understood, "far more profound than any in its preceding history" and, at the same time, the Baha'i Faith emerged from obscurity, "demonstrating on a global scale the unifying power with which its Divine origin has endowed it." In this course we will review, in the context of the Baha'i teachings, the two processes (the disintegration of an old order and the emergence of a new order) detailed in Century of Light and will examine the relationship between them . . .

Judaism for Deepening and Dialogue
Lead Faculty: Ted Brownstein
Faculty: Daniel Grolin

Duration of course: Three months (Feb. 15 - May 15, 2012)

Torah scroll Judaism, the oldest of the Semitic religions, can be said to be the mother Faith of Christianity, Islam, the Babi Faith, and the Baha'i Faith. Our study of Judaism will focus on the eternal spiritual teachings that, according to the Baha'i writings, all religions share. We will also explore Jewish theology and principles; Jewish history, Biblical, post-Biblical, modern, and modern sectarian; post-Biblical literature; the Jewish calendar, prayer, and life-cycle rituals; and Jewish/Baha'i dialogue. . . .

The Baha'i Faith and Philosophy
Lead Faculty: Ian Kluge
Faculty: Wolfgang Klebel

Science and Religion

Lead Faculty: Marleen Chase

Faculty: Nicola Daniels

Duration of course: Three Months (Mar. 15 - June 15, 2012)

Most Baha'is accept the harmony of science and religion and yet struggle to engage in the complexity of contemporary discussions. In this course we will explore a complementary view of science and religion consistent with both disciplines and with Baha'i texts while examining typical philosophical and historical misunderstandings that effectively undermine harmony. No background preparation is necessary, but we expect students to learn some basic philosophical concepts from course readings outside of Baha'i texts and to develop a more complex understanding of science and those who write about it. . .
