The Borrego Open Golf Tournament Raises $7,000 for Children's Center
The Borrego Springs Youth and Seniors Center is profoundly grateful to the organizers and participants of the Borrego Open Golf Tournament for their more than generous donation of $7,000 to the Borrego Springs Children's Center.
Tournament leader Steve Winchell wrote me, "Back in 1967 four friends visiting Borrego Springs went out to play a casual round of golf. Over the years that event evolved into an organized, two-day tournament with food, drink, a raffle, and most proudly, an annual gift to the Borrego Springs community.
This annual event has facilitated decades of laughs, memories, and a fair share of Borrego Open folklore."
"In the 20 years we’ve been making donations, our little tournament has raised
and donated over $80,000 for the direct benefit of the Borrego Springs
Children’s Center."
In recent years the tournament has been hosted by The RoadRunner Club and The Springs RV and Golf Resort. Randy Winchell, Steve's brother and co-chair of the tournament, wrote, "I just want to say thank you for the support you and the staff at the RoadRunner Club and The Springs have shown us all. You guys are the best!
He added, "And it would be impossible to leave out Teresa West...she's a saint!"
Steve elaborated, "This annual April trip to Borrego Springs is now centered around golf, but looking back on the decades, the founding four had it right from the very beginning. It’s not about the golf...it never was and it never will be. Golf is just our reason for gathering. It’s always been about the friendships, thememories, and using our good natured fun to do some good in the world."
