Highlights from the November meeting
The Board took the following actions at their Nov. 12th virtual meeting:

  • Agreed to support the UU ordination of our former music director, Nic Filzen; this will come to the congregation for a vote soon
  • Approved the expenditure of $1000 for equipment to support outdoor viewings of our YouTube worship service
  • Approved $500 to tent fumigate the Little House and $7400 to replace the 20+ year old Gilmour cloister roof; funding from Maintenance Reserves
  • Approved expenditure of $30-50K from the parking lot fund to supplement money pledged from donors ($84K to date) to fund the Kitchen Rehab Project; approved $10K in expenditures from the kitchen budget to get started with equipment and supply clean-out, asbestos removal and permitting.

The Board discussed issues/concerns to consider in planning next May's general membership meeting, recruiting for Leadership Development / Nominating Committee, received monthly finance and Minister's reports, discussed how to respond to emergent issues outside the Board meeting cycle, and were briefed on the new Board e-newsletter.

Introducing Our Board Task Forces

Late last spring the Board created three Task Forces to address pressing issues.

Facilities: Integrate facilities maintenance and Master Plan issues into a cogent two-year strategy (Pulling It Together) and manage that strategy; closely collaborate with the Buildings & Grounds Committee on project design and implementation; represent B&G interests before the Board.
Members: Sharon Winters (lead) and Karen White

Building Community in a Pandemic: Identify, schedule and promote events and activities to engage members during the pandemic. Sabine Von Aulock (lead)
Volunteers needed: We'd like to broaden this effort beyond the pandemic and, working with the Membership & Caring Committees, develop programming to support membership engagement and community outreach. Contact Sabine to get involved.

Capital Fund Raising: Appeal for donations to fund the kitchen rehab project; assess donor capacity/feasibility; closely collaborate with the Giving Team; assess other funding sources and make funding recommendation to the Board.
Members: Paul Craig (lead), Cynthia Patterson, Carol Ulmer, Tony D'Silva and Michael Killoren

Mission Moment - Celebrating Our Work
At the end of each Board meeting, we share a Mission Moment:

Listening to President–Elect Biden’s speech to our nation last Saturday, Nov 7, I was struck by how many of our UU principles he touched upon:

  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person
  • Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations
  • Acceptance of one another
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are part
That our country will be guided by both a president and vice president who embrace these ideals is heartwarming and encouraging.  In his speech, Biden also quoted Ecclesiastes 31-8For everything, there is a season…

"I trust he will make his presidency about a time to heal, a time to gather stones together, and a time for peace" - Karen White
UUSP Mission: To be an inclusive, evolving religious community that inspires spiritual and intellectual growth to make our world a better place.
