An Update on Our Partners in Haiti

The assignation of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse earlier this week has thrown the nation of Haiti into increased distress. As we continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ, we also keep our Haitian ELCA pastors in our hearts.

Even more chaos is now expected in the country as a result of this murder. The kidnapping of clergy has also been a common occurrence in Haiti. Pastor Livenson, who is the president of the Lutheran Church in Haiti, has taken his family into hiding.

Pastor Livenson is currently safe and has been in contact with members of the Florida-Bahamas Synod. At this precarious time, please keep him and his family in your prayers.

If you are so inclined, you can contact our members of Congress, Congressman Daniel Webster, and Senators Rubio and Scott, and ask for their support of Bill #HR2471 for the people of Haiti at https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members/FL/11.

What is Stephen Ministry?

Stephen Ministry.jpg

Stephen Ministry is a complete ministry system used by over 13,000 congregations worldwide to provide high-quality care and outreach to hurting people in the church and the community.

Through Stephen Ministry, congregations train a team of Stephen Ministers—lay members who have been equipped to provide one-to-one emotional and spiritual care in difficult times.

Each Stephen Minister is matched with a hurting person and meets weekly with that person to listen, care, pray, and encourage, for as long as the need exists.

Stephen Ministers care for those dealing with grief, divorce, job loss, medical crises, financial struggles, and many other life challenges.

To learn more about this caring ministry contact Pastor Bob Knepel at (352) 445-8216 or Kathy Smith at (352) 399-5103.

New Opportunities from Love INC

Love Inc.png

In an effort to support those struggling in our surrounding communities, the people of Hope Lutheran Church have a partnership with Love In the Name of Christ. Love INC is an association of local churches working together to change lives and communities through Christ. Love INC also offers programs for both outreach and community enrichment.

Love INC has a program called T4M Transformational Ministry. T4M is a series of evening classes where people can learn basic life skills such as finances, boundaries, and how a relationship with Christ facilitates the change. Love INC provides the study books and local churches provide instructors, space, a meal and child care during the classes and also provide mentors. Mentors are needed now!

T4M is now moving into the next, most exciting phase yet - Mentorship! The sole purpose of mentorship is to help families become debt free and free in Christ. This freedom is achieved by fostering the whole living through the life skills taught through T4M.

The mentor commitment is 2 hours each T4M session on Tuesday nights. This includes a provided dinner and a structured meeting time and space. Ideally, Mentors to have an overview of the four 12 week classes through a 2 hour orientation, or would have taken the classes. As a Mentor, you have an excellent opportunity to “make disciples” and have a satisfying and rewarding experience doing so, with motivated individuals.

Love INC also has a program called Clothe a Kid where help is provided in the form of back to school clothing for children. This year, the emphasis will be on helping the people that are trying to help themselves. Clothe-A-Kid is a relational program that provides families with a loving experience as they shop for back to school clothes. For those who are interested in supporting these deserving kids and their families, there are two ways to get involved.

Volunteer to Shop with a Family

Volunteers are paired with a family to help them select the clothing and shoes (following school guidelines) needed. Volunteers also help track the spending of the family while showing the love of Christ to them. This program is only limited by the number of volunteers we have to shop with families. We need you to meet the needs of your community's kids!

Shop at Kohl's in The Villages on Tuesday, August 3rd and Thursday, August 5th

To register, go to www.loveinchof.org/Clothe-a-Kid.html.

Sponsor an Individual Kid or a Family

Sponsors donate $240, $60, or any amount (helping kids shop) and the family gives $10 (securing their spot). The total, per kid, is used to shop at Kohl's for clothing or shoes for back to school.

  • Comp T4M (Fully engaged in life change) - $240 per kid
  • TM (Getting to know you program) - $60 per kid

Donate Kohl's Gift Cards, check, or cash via mail to: Love INC,15797S. Hwy 441, Summerfield, FL 34491.

Lake Weir Ladies Bible Study

The Lake Weir Ladies Bible Study continues to meet at Lake Weir Campus on the SECOND TUESDAY of each month. New members are always welcome! Join us July 13th from 1:00pm to 2:30pm at our next meeting; BYOB. Come even if you missed us last month.

Our Bible Study topic will be part two of Just L.I.F.E. The July lesson from the Gather magazine is titled Just Truth by Angela Ikhabeb. This article takes a look at race and gender inequity. What can we learn from our own experiences? Come with an open heart and an open mind and find out.

Please contact Denise Marter at gardencrone@centurylink.net or (352) 643-1010 to RSVP.

Rock Update – Volunteers Needed?

Last school year, a small number of volunteers shopped and stocked shelves for The Rock. Because of Covid, volunteers were not permitted to interact with the learners. A school employee was able to keep The Rock open most days and we continued to provide food, clothing, shoes, hygiene products and school supplies to about 100 students per week. However, we were not able to provide the most important thing we offer - the love of Christ!

What will happen this year? School starts August 10th. The School Board meets on July 27th and on that date will decide if we will be allowed to have Hope volunteers staff The Rock.

If the answer is yes, we will only have a week to line up and schedule volunteers. If you would like to volunteer to help the learners shop and share Christ’s love, please send an email to fobrien@gate.net. There is going to be a new principal at the school this year, but I assume that we will keep the same schedule. Can you help on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 11:00am to 1:00pm?

Please contact Fred O’Brien at (352) 250-3814 if you have questions.
