Olympia Arts + Heritage Alliance used a $500 micro grant they were awarded by the Olympia Downtown Alliance, to implement a community project called “It Happened Here,” a multi-panel window display for the windows on the State Street side of this historic building, showing historic photos including:
- Cecilia Pell Bob dry smoking cockle clams in the old Squaxin village Steh-Chass (now known as Olympia)
- 1856 map of downtown Olympia (formerly known as Smithfield or Smithster)
- 1870s era livery stable at this site
- Columbia Hall, an earlier fire station, in 1902
- The City Hall/Fire station building in 1912
- Olympia Firefighters, ca 1947
- Amanda Benek Smith, Olympia’s first woman Mayor, who served in this building from 1953-1960
- Barbara Greene, Olympia’s first female firefighter in the 1980s, served from this building
The next round of micro-grants, available to downtown businesses, will open in early October.

Olympia Armory Building: Creative Campus
|
|
For three decades community members have advocated for a dedicated arts space in Olympia to support the arts as integral to Olympia’s way of life; encourage community growth through creativity and innovation; use the arts to connect people, ideas, and place; and operate from an equity framework.
In response to this call to action the Parks, Arts and Recreation seeks to leverage the 50,000 sq. ft. Armory facility toward this important work.
Community input has shaped the working vision and will continue to guide the project into the future. Fall 2021 was an opportunity to fill out a community survey, attend an open house and Armory lighting event. March 2022 was a chance to celebrate the official building transfer, see emerging themes and give input on how to prioritize space use.
Be sure to visit the Armory for the Vision Gathering on Saturday, October 22, at 2 pm.

DAVID NOAH GILES at Thomas Architecture Studios Gallery through ArtsWalk

Artist Statement: My painting is rooted in my early life experience, amidst the sights and sounds of New York city where I absorbed the loud rhythmic symphony of the subway, the constant construction and destruction of buildings. Moving through diverse crowds that interplay global cultures also had a profound effect. The exciting sounds of Jazz, Rock and Latin music permeated my being. To this day I carry these influences within me and express them in my art.
DROP IN AND VIEW ARTWORK TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY AFTER 2:00 at THOMAS ARCHITECTURE STUDIOS, 525 Columbia Street SW, Olympia.
