Bookstore news
Independent Bookstore Day success
We've been hearing so many positive reports from this year's Bookstore Day, many of them describing how wonderful it was to have people somewhat back together again. Booksellers in Iowa and Minnesota were featured in Shelf Awareness and Publishers Weekly. Cheers to the many others we saw through the media, social or otherwise. We see you and loved your promotions!
"The response we received Saturday for Independent Bookstore Day was off the charts. It was, hands down, our best sales day ever. Seriously. I cannot thank everyone enough for showing up and supporting the shop."

--Bart Carithers, owner of Next Page Books, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in a Facebook post

Zenith Bookstore co-owner Angel Dobrow braved the cold temperatures outside to hand out specially-made Zenith Bookstore cupcakes to customers waiting to enter the Duluth, Minn., indie on Independent Bookstore Day. Saturday was the indie's second best sales day ever in its four-year history.

Flint Hills building buzz
Flint Hills Books is open for business. In a press release, owner Jennifer Kassebaum writes, "I am defying the odds by opening a 800 sq foot store in community with a population of less than 5,000 during a pandemic, but the beautifully restored 1887 bank building where the bookstore is located and my book selection (I think) is causing a little buzz in the Flint Hills of Kansas."

What we're reading
"I'm returning to The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom, which has been sitting in my TBR for since it became a National Book Award Finalist. I'm in the middle of a big renovation of the kitchen in my own yellow house, which was built in 1905, so I'm enjoying thinking about the history of the spaces we live in and the lives of the people who inhabited them." β€”Carrie
"Jo Jo Makoons: The Used-to-Be Best Friend led to a very lengthy discussion with my 6-year-old about the nature of ARCs and book publishing. My daughter is so excited about this book that we now have May 2022 marked on our calendar in the HOPES that there will be more Jo Jo Makoons books by then. This is the best of all books for young girls, featuring a confident girl who is proud of her Ojibwe heritage and whose voice anyone will recognize after hanging out with a 7-year-old. This series will be a staple in our house." β€”Kate
