Let's get a "Slow Street" for a month!
Deadline for our application August 7
|
|
|
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) piloted Tucson Slow Streets, an initiative to reconfigure streets to support social distancing and encourage physical activity. The Slow Streets program temporarily closes certain streets to all but local traffic, giving Tucsonans more space to safely walk, bike, and run.
THIS IS A PILOT PROGRAM.
IF CHOSEN, THE "SLOW STREET" LASTS FOR ONE MONTH.
Certain streets in Tucson have been selected as candidates for a slow street month. Lester Street and Seneca have been designated as potential candidates. The JPNA is submitting an application nominating Lester. Lester is a proposed bike path by COT, but has never been designated as such.
|
|
FIRST: JPNA needs your support.
For more information
and take the survey naming Lester and maybe offering to be a block leader (stipend offered)--if you live on Lester.
|
|
SECOND: Hurry!
E-mail your name and contact info to Colleen Nichols,
[email protected]
, our JP Pres., so she can add your name to our application. The more neighborhood names, the stronger our application -
due August 7.
|
|
Slow Streets are
- neighborhood streets, temporarily limited to local traffic only through barricades, cones, and signs.
- Provide space for safe physical activity, transportation, and recreation (walking, wheelchair rolling, jogging, biking, and playing) in the street.
- Encourage people driving to use alternate routes, only using Slow Streets when necessary to reach a final destination.
- Urge people driving to drive slowly and safely, and look out for people sharing the street.
- Do not impact emergency vehicle access in any way.
Slow Streets are NOT:
- Closed streets - local residents, emergency vehicles, environmental services, and delivery vehicles can use them to get in and out of neighborhoods. Cut-through traffic is discouraged from using these streets.
- Gathering places – At this time, due to public health precautions associated with COVID-19, Slow Streets are not meant to be places for gathering in large groups or socializing. While using Slow Streets, people should follow current public health guidance (Pima County Health Department)

Still Time for the Census-Workers knocking on doors
|
|
THERE'S STILL TIME TO COMPLETE YOUR CENSUS FORM - With all that has been going on in the United States lately, you may have pushed aside your reminders to complete the required U.S. Census, but there's still time. Responses help determine the number of seats each state has in Congress and guide how nearly $700 billion in federal funding is spent in communities each year. It’s estimated up to $3,000 per person, per year is at stake for Arizona. The answers are kept anonymous and are used only to produce statistics. Starting this month, census workers will be knocking on doors of homes from which they've received no response. Census takers will wear masks and follow local public health guidelines when they visit. Follow the links below for more information.
