Milestone and Observance Resources

Smoke-Free Air 15th Anniversary

Saturday, July 5 marked the 15th anniversary of Wisconsin’s Smoke-Free Indoor Air Law. While we celebrate this milestone, we also acknowledge that we must stay vigilant in our work. Even today, threats to this law exist, putting the benefits of Smoke-free Air in Wisconsin at risk. To promote the healthiest Wisconsin possible we need to continue to protect and enhance the existing law. Please refer to the Smoke-Free Air 15th Anniversary Resource Overview for helpful tools including:

Disability Pride Month and Network Spotlight

More than 1 in 4 adults in the United States — over 70 million people — have a disability. In July, we recognize Disability Pride Month, a time to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of people with disabilities. Here are some resources to support commercial tobacco prevention and treatment work with a focus on people with disabilities.

  • Disability & Tobacco Use in Wisconsin (2023 Wisconsin BRFSS data)
  • Disability Network for Tobacco Control and Cancer Prevention - National Association of Chronic Disease Directors -- CDC has funded nine National Networks to advance the prevention of commercial tobacco use and cancer in populations experiencing tobacco- and cancer-related health outcomes. Funding was granted to the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) to be the fiscal agent for the Disability Network for Tobacco Control and Cancer Prevention. The NACDD is partnering with Lakeshore Foundation to advance the prevention of commercial tobacco use and cancer in populations experiencing tobacco- and cancer-related health effects with a focus on people with disabilities, including U.S. veterans. The “Network” brings together national, state, and local partners focused on tobacco control and cancer prevention for people with disabilities. In addition to creating the Network, NACDD established an advisory board and communities of practice (CoP) to support community-based policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) change; provide comprehensive training and technical assistance (T/TA); and support a mass-reach health communication strategy. The strategies aim to:
  • Advance tobacco control and cancer prevention initiatives to accelerate the decline in commercial tobacco use
  • Reduce the incidence/mortality of tobacco-related cancers
  • Address adverse health outcomes for people with disabilities including U.S. veterans

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

July is also National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. In many marginalized communities mental health struggles have long been silenced. Yet we know that intersecting stressors such as structural racism, poverty, environmental injustice and violence lay the groundwork for mental health concerns. For marginalized communities mental health isn’t just about individual care, it’s about community transformation. Healing comes as brave voices rise, stories are shared and trust is rebuilt. Here are some resources around commercial tobacco use and mental and/or behavioral health from movement partners to further inform your local efforts:

ICYMI: Quit Line and Other Campaign Assets

As shared in the June issue of N2U, CTPTP’s existing paid media campaign flights wrapped up at the end of May and we will not have any paid online presence until fall 2025, when a new youth prevention campaign is anticipated to launch. Please feel free to continue using these media campaign assets in your earned media plans. The linked folder includes print and digital content for the Quit Line, Tobacco 21, Tobacco is Changing and Live Vape Free campaigns.

Related: UW-CTRI has compiled a social media toolkit on the Quit Line website. It contains an array of videos, images, and links that coalitions, health systems, partners and other advocates may use to promote the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line and Live Vape Free.
