Native American Heritage Month

November is National Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor the history, achievements and traditions of the first inhabitants of the Americas. Help celebrate the rich culture and contributions of America’s First Peoples and push back against the commercial tobacco industry by promoting cessation resources and educating the public on the distinction between traditional and commercial tobacco.

Wisconsin’s Native people are disproportionately impacted by commercial tobacco, with about one third currently using any type of tobacco. The Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line offers a culturally tailored program to help change that. To date, the American Indian Quit Line has helped 370 people on their commercial tobacco quit journeys. Participants over age 18 may be eligible for 12 weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy.

Here are resources and learning opportunities to support your local efforts:

Great American Smokeout 2025

The annual Great American Smokeout (GASO) is coming up Thursday, November 20. The event, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, encourages people who currently smoke or vape to quit — even if it’s just for one day.

Please use these resources from CTPTP and our partners to support your local GASO promotions:

Youth Vaping Data

Wisconsin Data Brief: Youth Tobacco Monitoring Project

A recent report from the Rutgers University’s Center for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco shows flavored vape products continue to flood shelves and find their way in front of young people. Schools from counties across Wisconsin submitted photos of 366 different vaping products. The vast majority of the products featured in those photos were vapes (96%), with 87% of those vapes being single-use, and 70% of all flavored products featuring a fruit flavor.

Here are a few resources to use in your local educational outreach and earned media activities around vaping products:

Smoke-Free Air

Reminder: 15 years, 15 policies challenge

As mentioned in the last movement call, efforts are underway to refresh the Smoke-Free Air policy maps and visualize the communities covered by extended SFA protections. Please see the 15 policy challenge overview for ways to get involved and help keep policy tracking tools updated. Please reach out to Wendy Vander Zanden with questions about the challenge or contact Liz Adams or Kayleigh Day for policy-specific inquiries.
