Local leadership fights on behalf of area standard wages
Park Place of St. John, an assisted living community, had a contractor that refused to abide by the Town's policy for contractors and licensing. The result would drive down the standard of living for St. John and its residents. After discovering what was happening through visits with our members, business representatives went to the Town Hall and discussed the activities with the building and planning department as well as Town Manager, Steve Kil. Kil worked diligently to get the project back on track and uphold the standard for the community of St. John. It is always a pleasure to partner with great community leadership to maintain our area standards of living with in our communities.

"The Town of St. John takes pride in cooperating with our Labor Unions to ensure that quality construction is maintained in our Community, " said Kil.

Business Representative Eric Yhasz and St. John Town Manager Steve Kil hold Thank you Banner for Park Place assisted living in St. John, Ind.

Virgil Whitmore
Ohio superintendent attends specific Superintendent Training
"I really enjoyed the experience of going out to the [International Training Center] for the superintendent training class. It taught me skills like making sure I manage my time on the jobsite correctly and the different kinds of jobs there are. I also liked how we get paired up with someone to mentor us so that we can expand our knowledge as superintendents. I feel it is a great program for people to go through. Because you hear different experiences from different people from all over."

Baptist Health provides best practices in healthcare training for employees
Fifteen healthcare employees of Baptist Health attended an 8-hour training its facility in Paducah, KY, provided by IKORCC staff.

Construction Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) Best Practices is an innovative program that provides patient-focused training for carpenters and other trades working in hospitals, medical facilities or other occupied spaces. This set of best practices helps prevent the spread of disease and infection during construction at healthcare facilities. ICRA instructors also offer training opportunities to healthcare facility staff.

Tonn and Blank understands importance of well-trained workforce in hospitals
Tonn and Blank Construction carpenters completed the Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) certification training class. In this 24-hour class, members learned best practices for containing pathogens, controlling airflow and recognizing and properly disposing of hazardous materials. These graduates now have the skills necessary to keep hospital construction sites safe and infection-free.

ICRA Training important for contractors and healthcare staff alike
The discussions included explaining the difference of an ICRA-trained contractor compared to one that is not. Presenters recommended including in the ICRA training in all hospital specifications and policy to ensure safety.

Ron Clements, instructor at Warsaw's training campus and Local 413 member , led an 8-hour ICRA awareness class for staff from Memorial Hospital, Elkhart General Hospital, and Balfour Beatty.
IKORCC Representatives Matt McGriff and Evan Martin assisted APIC in hosting its quarterly Region 3 meeting held at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind. The meeting included 15 infection prevention nurses and hospital personnel.

Hundreds gathered at the Kentucky statehouse for committee vote on Senate Bill 9
The statehouse filled with hundreds of rank and file members of the Kentucky building trades in early February. The bill brought before the Labor and Industry Committee was to repeal to the prevailing wage for construction workers on school projects. Cheers were heard throughout the halls after the votes came in, 14-6, striking down the bill.

"There is no academic research, no federal or state or peer review journals that suggest prevailing wage affects construction costs." said Charlie McCoy, testifying on behalf of the building trades. McCoy went on to share "with prevailing wage, contractors compete for the best workers and the safest workers, not the cheapest and most exploitable workforce."

Success in Cincinnati: new wage theft legislation
Mayor David Mann of Cincinnati revealed at a Thriving Cincinnati his new wage theft legislation.

"If you work a hard day's work, you should get paid for it" whether you're documented or not, said Council Member Chris Seelbach. "It's not a Republican or a Democratic value, it's an American value."  Read more

Educating elected officials on responsible bidding ordinances
A responsible bidding ordinance (RBO) would establish responsible bidding practices and submission requirements for submitting bids to perform construction work on public works projects. This includes a set of enforceable qualifications incorporated into a construction project's bid specifications that inform bidders that only competent and  qualified  construction firms and trained personnel will be selected to work on the project. Having an RBO in place puts all potential bidders on  notice that additional factors other than lowest price will be considered with bids are reviewed.

West Virginia loses Democratic seat and Right to Work
When West Virginia State Senator Daniel Hall switched parties, from D to R and then resigned, there was a much debate over which party should fill his seat. Many stated he was a Democrat going into office, so a D should fill the seat, making it a tie in the Senate 17-17 and very important for issues like Right to Work and Prevailing Wage.

However, because Sen. Hall was an R when he vacated his seat, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin was required to re-appoint a Republican. A vote by the West Virginia Supreme Court confirmed the party in question.

Unfortunately, with a vote by the House in mid-February, West Virginia became the 26th Right to Work state Read more about the Right to Work vote.

IKORCC Representative testimony is public record
Michael Sliwinski, PE, Chief Building Official in Trumbull County, requested IKORCC Business Representative Michael Rapovy to offer testimony on behalf of  supporting the Trumbull County Building Inspection Department plan to raise permit, application, and all other fees necessary to match the fees schedule in neighboring Mahoning County.

Rapovy's testimony went on public record and was heard by all three Trumbull County Commissioners. It will now go through the legislative process first to the prosecutor's office for review, then passage by the commissioners.

Trivett Contracting requests MSHA Training
Some projects require certifications before you can even bid on a project. When Trivett Contracting had a need for 15 of its millwrights to obtain a 24-hour Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) certification, we brought in a special instructor for the training. This is just another example of how we're partnering with our signatory contractors to meet the needs of the industry.

"I had heard lots of good things about the International Training Center in Las Vegas. What a great hands-on training place it is. So it was with much curiosity as to how the UBC would do with the  Collaborative  Leadership Program that I went to Las Vegas.

The people at the ITC are what make the program. Everyone I met and talked to while there were very friendly and enthusiastic both about learning and also about passing on the knowledge they had to each of us.

The classes were very challenging and mad you think outside the job you normally do. I believe what we as students in the Collaborative Leadership Class learned will help us embrace the changes in the construction industry that are coming like tools, techniques, younger generations."
"This leadership course is hands down the best I've had the pleasure to attend. The content is well thought out and presented in a fun engaging manner. The material presented is such that offers real everyday practical skills that not only produce better leaders in the workplace, but better people in general.

In general my visit and opportunity to attend this course, really made me appreciate the great commitment by the UBC to education our members and provide them with the opportunity to be the best in the construction industry."
