Greetings!

March 19 heralds the beginning of spring, a welcome world of blooming flowers, budding trees and milder weather.

At the same time, we are all very aware of the challenges and impacts of the COVID-19 virus. KCNA extends our support and best wishes to the whole nursing community.

KCNA is closely monitoring the situation and acknowledges that cancelling and/or rescheduling of KCNA events is a possibility . If our events are cancelled or rescheduled, we will notify attendees via email, e-news, social media and our website. Please stay tuned for updates.

Now more than ever, with increased levels of stress and anxiety, it is very important to practice self-care. See below for some ideas on how to take simple steps to decrease stress and take good care of yourself.

Simple Steps for Self-Care
female_doing_yoga.jpg
Stress isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so what action steps can you take to keep it in check? Taylor Schroeder, a critical care nurse in Cincinnati, Ohio recommends that nurses incorporate simple meditation techniques into their daily lives. In an article she wrote for the American Holistic Nurses Association, she states:

"One form of meditation that I like to practice is sitting meditation, specifically parked in my car 15 minutes before work. Not knowing what I am going to walk into before work can be stressful in and of itself, not to mention the stressors of caring for two young children at home. While waiting to walk into work, we can take a moment to focus on our breathing, sit with eyes closed, and imagine the air moving in and out of the lungs. We can practice taking slow, deep breaths, and perhaps even try some guided imagery."

More Everyday Self-Care Tips

The American Holistic Nurse Association has additional tips about how to increase your self-care. Here are a few to get you started:

  • Eat meals without distractions whenever possible. Put away your cell phone and focus on the flavors, textures and colors of your food.

  • Pause hourly and take three to four deep breaths.

  • Prepare for bed 30 minutes before by turning off all electronics.
