May 2021

May Greetings-

April Showers bring May flowers....what a lovely time of the year. Not only have we been enjoying the beautiful flowers of the Pacific NW, but we have also been celebrating National Nurses Week, Month and Year!

Thanks for joining us for our Annual Gala to kick off the celebration. We so enjoyed celebrating with you and introducing our awardees and scholarship recipients. Join us in congratulating them all!

We recommend that you take a moment this month to celebrate all that you do as nurses- how about mixing up a Nurses Blackberry Bramble cocktail/mocktail, pouring it into your fanciest glass, and enjoying it while sitting outside taking in the beauty of the springtime flowers?

Wishing you all a very Happy Nurses Month!

KCNA Annual Gala Overview
Thank You For Joining Us!
Stephanie Staples of Your Life Unlimited acted as our Gala Emcee. She is a re-wired nurse, coach, author and speaker. To learn more about her, click here.

Here is the toast she wrote to help us celebrate during the Gala:

Toast to Nurses
To you, the nurse
Who heals the hurts

Who uses your brain and heart and soul
To ease the suffering and the toll

To you at risk, at every shift
To you who give others a lift

For every little thing you do
The expected and the extras too

Thank you doesn’t seem enough
When what you go through is so rough

But tonight I send a toast, your way
As you deserve every day.

Shining Star Nurse Awards
Congratulations to our 2021 Shining Star Awardees!
Tonya Hill, RN
Tonya Hill has been a nurse at Seattle Children’s for 15 years where she works on the cardiac, renal, and liver transplant unit. When asked what she loves about being a nurse, Tonya replied “as a pediatric nurse, it’s the sweet little souls that I get to help every day. Kids are innocent and so precious, and it brings me joy to care for them on a daily basis. Their resilience is amazing.” Read the full paragraph about Tonya here.
Lindsey Royal, RN, BSN
Lindsey Royal works for the Seneca Family of Agencies. Lindsey was nominated by five of her co-workers! Seneca is a non-profit mental health organization which provides outpatient, residential, foster placement, crisis stabilization, and school-based services to children and adolescents. Lindsey chose nursing as a career because she enjoys science and helping people. She also enjoys the flexibility of hours and locations that allows her to balance her life including family and farm. Read the full paragraph about Lindsey here.

Fundraising for Scholarships
Making Dreams Happen

We love to make dreams happen for local nursing students, and we know you do too!

Through our GiveBig Campaign, you helped us raise $1,100 and another $1,700 during the Annual Gala. And, again this year, Salal Credit Union has generously donated five full scholarships! In addition, we have received many individual donations. Currently, we have raised about $30,000. Thank You!

We are still $4,000 short of our goal and are still accepting donations. If you haven't yet had a chance to donate, we encourage you to do so. Also, if someone asks you what they can do to help nurses, let them know how our scholarship program helps ensure the future of local nurses. Donate anytime at our website:

Donations to the KCNA Scholarship Fund are always tax deductible.
Nightingale Film Trailer Released
HEARTS- Health Enriched by the Arts released a trailer of their upcoming film: Nightingale: Regarding the Life & Passion of Miss Florence Nightingale by Pamela Gerke.

The film is a testament to one of the primary founders of the nursing profession and a pioneer of the importance of sanitation and science-based medical care. Nightingale spoke the truth, catching the old guard in the act of being obsolete, and brought historical changes to the practice of medicine.

The full length film will be released this summer. HEARTS will offer this film free of charge on their YouTube channel as a gift to nurses and healthcare workers who have given so much to us all, especially during this pandemic.

KCNA is proud to be a sponsor of this film. Click here to see the trailer of the upcoming film.
