Sunnyvale Mobility Plan Overview

The Town Council received an important briefing at its Jan. 27 meeting, with an update on the Town’s Mobility Plan.

This overarching plan includes Sunnyvale’s Thoroughfare Plan and a Trails Master Plan. The Thoroughfare Plan coordinates roadway planning with land use plans to support development and growth patterns and population forecasts and trends. It also allows the Town to preserve right-of-way for future roadways, ensures additional connectivity for vehicular mobility within the Town and surrounding areas, and allows Sunnyvale to access state and federal funding for roadway projects. The Thoroughfare Plan was last updated in 2018.

Town staff and transportation consultants presented the outcomes of months of research, study, public surveys and other public input to explain recommendations for improving traffic flow and accessibility throughout the community. Timelines for these projects will be determined as growth and future development occur.

Key highlights of the plan include:

  • A planned roundabout for Collins at Town East Boulevard
  • Future expansion of Collins Road between Tripp Road and Town East Boulevard
  • Plans for signalizing multiple intersections to increase traffic flow capacity and safety
  • Long-term plans for extending the President George Bush Tollway (PGBT)

The updated Mobility Plan also includes a newly created Trails Master Plan, which identifies enhancements for pedestrian and bicycle access across the Town.

Here are some key items to note from the Trails Plan:

  • Identify and address missing connections between parks, schools and neighborhoods
  • Identify alternatives for connecting north and south Sunnyvale across US 80

For more details, please review the presentation document and listen to the presentation to Town Council, which is item J-2, and click forward to approximately 41 minutes into the meeting.

The Town Council will soon consider a resolution to formalize the Mobility Plan. Roadway Impact Fee rates will also be adjusted through the Town ordinance approval process. Both items are scheduled for February approval.

Saving Water = Saving Money

Remember, your annual wastewater rates are based on your water consumption during the months of December, January and February, which can save you about $200 each year.

Reducing indoor and outdoor water use this winter will save you money all year round.
