Opposition To CA Staff Proposal

REPRINTED FROM LONG REACH VILLAGE NEWSLETTER: March 21

If you don't know already, we want to educate you on an important issue facing Columbia residents!

Columbia Association (CA) Staff presented a proposal evaluating various options to take over central management of all villages' community buildings at the CA Board of Directors Meeting on February 27.

View Video of the CA Board Meeting

Residents and village community associations have voiced strong opposition to the proposal, citing concerns over its potential to disrupt the independent operations of the villages. These associations play a vital role in serving their communities by providing tailored services and organizing cherished programs such as:

  • Native Tree & Plant Giveaways
  • Village Pool Parties
  • Community-wide Yard Sales
  • 50+ Lunch events
  • CARES Events (environmental educational events and programs)
  • Seasonal Celebrations
  • Block Grants for Community Gatherings and Cul-de-Sac Beautification Projects
  • Classes, Lectures, and Workshops
  • Wellness Events
  • Community Outreach/Newsletters

These programs and services are the cornerstone of community life, fostering connection and engagement among residents.

While CA is attempting to take control of the village buildings and the revenue they generate, it is simultaneously finalizing a new management contract with the villages. The contract is the other source of funding for the villages, determining how assessments collected from residents are disbursed back to the villages to perform required HOA functions and provide other services. CA rejected revisions requested by the Village Managers and their respective Boards and put forth a heavily one-sided contract that imposes costly and burdensome requirements on the Villages. The contracts must be signed “as is” by April 22, 2025or villages will not receive funding, which is monies that their residents have paid.

The Columbia Association’s proposal has sparked significant concern among residents and village leaders, who fear it could undermine the independence, community services, and events that make Columbia’s villages unique and vibrant. The villages have long served as the heart of the neighborhoods, fostering connection and directly reinvesting in their communities. CA’s overreach deserves broader attention, as it affects not only the operational autonomy of the villages but also the residents who depend on their tailored programs and services.

The next CA Board of Directors Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 27, 2025, at 7 pm. Resident Speak-Out InformationTo voice your opinion, send a letter or comments to the following: CA Board & CEO/President

Fun Facts this week is about  about Gardening and Plants...

Garlic Mustard is an actual plant. Garlic mustard is a member of the mustard family and is not garlic. It is a herb that is typically seen in the eastern and midwestern United States.

Bamboo is the fastest growing wood plant in the world. It can grow 35 inches in a single day. And, is impossible to get rid of!

Baking soda gives you sweeter tomatoes. When sprinkled to your soil, baking soda decreases the acidity levels of the soil. In turn, sweetens up your tomatoes.

Studies have found that tending to plants and vegetation help boost your mood. Spending time to care for a plant helps the brain produce serotonin. Serotonin is the happy chemicals that are naturally produced by our minds and can combat depression.

Feed the soil between crops. To keep production high, work in compost or aged manure between crops. A balanced organic fertilizer will also help encourage healthy growth.

Plan to pull weeds after a rain. The moist soil makes weeding easier and long-rooted weeds, like dandelions will just slip from the soil – so satisfying!

Live music at iconic Merriweather Post Pavilion is revving up for Summer and Fall 2025!

Get your group together and come on out to the best concert venue in the area! Whether it is an indoor seat or the famous Lawn, you are sure to have an amazing party. From Country to Rock and Heavy Metal to New Age, Merriweather has it all!

Top Safety Tips: Add AirTags or Tiles To Your Car To Track Your Vehicles!

Resident safety is critical. A few tips from the Howard County Police Department (HCPD):

1) By dialing 911 for emergencies and in progress incidents, or to have an Officer dispatched to a location.

2) By dialing 410-313-2200, this is the HCPD (non-emergency) dispatch number. 410-290-Drug (Drug tip line) and 410-313-STOP (Anonymous Tip Line).

3) www.hcpd.org, There is a section of the website near the bottom where you can file an on-line report. Details for filing a report are explained on the website. If you do NOT report it, then HCPD can not investigate it.

4) Lock your cars, homes, garage doors and apartments as a lot of crime involves "crimes of opportunity" where thieves test for unlocked doors.

5) Tools for community associations, groups and residents CLICK HERE for Community Outreach.

6) Put an Apple AirTag or Tile (for Andriod phones) in your car to track your car if it is ever stolen.

7) It is "porch pirate" time everyday so protect all of your deliveries.

ALERT: Report non-emergencies to:
410-313-2200.
